Panchama Karmgrantha
259
Pana, niyasavapaesu - by all its regions, gahecha - it grasps, jiu-jiva.
Gatha-artha - The jiva grasps the karmaskandhās (karmic aggregates) that are present in one region, which are endowed with infinite auspicious taste-bearing atoms and have infinite regions, and which possess the four touch sensations, two smells, five colors, and one taste.
Vishesha-artha - The gatha clarifies the nature of the karmaskandhās that are grasped by the jiva, and explains the process by which the jiva grasps them. The karmaskandhās grasped by the jiva are material (paudgalika), i.e., they are specific aggregations of pudgala (material) atoms. Therefore, they possess the qualities of pudgala such as touch, taste, smell, and color.
Each pudgala atom has one of the five tastes, one of the five colors, one of the two smells, and two of the eight touch sensations (heavy-light, soft-hard, cold-hot, oily and dry).
1. The atom is itself the cause, not produced by anything else. It has one taste, one color, and two touches, and is the substratum of the effect.
- As quoted in the Tattvartha-bhashya
