आत्मा का लक्षण ज्ञान है। हम यह कह सकते हैं कि जहां-जाँ आत्मा वहीं-वहीं ज्ञान अर्थात जानना है। ज्ञान और आत्मा एक-दूसरे से अभिन्न । प्रत्येक जीवित प्राणी, चाहे वह मनुष्य हो या पशु-पक्षी या सूक्ष्म कीट-पतंग, उसमें ज्ञान अवश्य होता है। यह बात दूसरी है कि विभिन्न आत्माओं पर कर्मों का आवरण भिन्न-भिन्न प्रकार का होने के कारण भिन्न-भिन्न जीवों के ज्ञान में न्यूनाधिकता हो सकती है परन्तु ऐसा कभी नहीं होता कि जहाँ आत्मा हो. वहाँ ज्ञान न हो ।
ज्ञान को यदि शरीर का लक्षण मानें तो बड़े शरीर में अधिक ज्ञान और छोटे शरीर में अपेक्षाकृत कम ज्ञान होना चाहिए | परन्तु यह बात अनुभव के विपरीत है। इसके अतिरिक्त शव में भी ज्ञान का अस्तित्व मानना पड़ेगा जो कि होता ही नहीं ।

प्रत्येक जीव में हर्ष विषाद, प्रेम, घृणा आदि भावनाएं दिखती हैं। ये भावनाएँ जीव के भौतिक शरीर पिण्ड की नहीं हैं। यदि ये भावनाएँ भौतिक पदार्थो की गुण होतीं तो उन्हें सदैव ही सब भौतिक पदार्थों में प्राप्त होना चाहिये था; परन्तु ऐसा होता नहीं है । शान की तरह ये भावनाएँ केवल जीवित प्राणियों में हो होती हैं । इसलिए ये भावनाएं भी शरीर में विद्यमान किसी अभौतिक पदार्थ की अनुभूति कराती हैं और वह जो अभौतिक पदार्थ है, उसी का नाम आत्मा है ।
