इन सब बातों पर ध्यान देने से यह माने बिना सन्तोष नहीं होता कि चेतन एक स्वतन्त्र तत्व है। जानते या अनजानले वह जो कुछ भी अच्छाबुरा कर्म करता है, उसका फल उसे भोगना ही पड़ता है और इसीलिए उसे पुनर्जन्म के चक्कर में घूमना पड़ता है । तथागत बुद्ध ने भी पुनर्जन्म माना है। कर्म जक्र-कृत पुनर्जन्म को मानता है | यह पुनर्जन्म का स्वीकार आत्मा के स्वतन्त्र अस्तिस्व को मानने के लिए प्रबल प्रमाण है ।
आत्मा के सम्बन्ध में कुछ विशेष ज्ञातव्य
पूर्वोक्त संदर्भों से यह स्पष्ट ज्ञात हो जाता है कि आत्मा का अस्तित्व अनादि अनन्त है। वह न तो कभी बनी थी और न कभी इसका नाश होगा | वह शाश्वत है । इस पर प्रश्न हो सकता है कि जब आस्मा किसी भी प्रकार से दिखाई नहीं देती है तो हम उसका अस्तित्व कैसे स्वीकार कर लें ? इस सम्बन्ध में यही कहा जा सकता है कि देखना, स्पर्श होना आदि भौतिक पदार्थों का होता है। लेकिन आत्मा भौतिक पदार्थ नहीं है, अभौतिक है, इसलिए इसके देखने, स्पर्श होने की कल्पना नहीं की जानी चाहिए। यह तो अनुभूति द्वारा ही जानी जा सकती है।
साधारणतया यह कहा जाता है कि हम अपनी आँख से देखते हैं, कानों से सुनते हैं आदि । किन्तु यह सत्य नहीं है । ये इन्द्रियाँ तो उपकरण मात्र है, वास्तव में विषयों को ग्रहण करने की शक्ति तो आत्मा में है। यही आत्मा इन इन्द्रियों के माध्यम से देखने, स्पर्श करने आदि कार्यों को करती है ।
इस सम्बन्ध में एक और तथ्य विचारणीय है । आँखें केवल देख सकती हैं, कान केवल सुन सकते हैं, नाक सूंघ सकती है, जीम खट्टे-मीठे आदि रसों का स्वाद ले सकती है और त्वचा ठंडे-गरम आदि का अनुभव कर सकती है। यदि हम आँखें बन्द कर लें तो शरीर के अन्य अंग से देख नहीं सकते, मदि हम कान बन्द कर लें तो शरीर के किसी अन्य अंग से सुन नहीं सकते हैं आदियादि । परन्तु हमारे शरीर के अन्दर कोई एक ऐसी है जो एक साथ देखना, सुनना सूचना आदि क्रिया शक्ति का नाम ही आत्मा या चेतना है ।

It is generally said that we see with our eyes, hear with our ears, etc. But this is not true. These senses are merely instruments; the actual power to perceive objects lies in the soul. It is the soul that performs the actions of seeing, touching, etc., through these senses.

Another fact worth considering in this regard is that eyes can only see, ears can only hear, nose can only smell, tongue can only taste sour-sweet, etc., and skin can only feel cold-hot, etc. If we close our eyes, we cannot see with any other part of the body; if we close our ears, we cannot hear with any other part of the body, and so on. But there is something inside our body that can see, hear, smell, etc., simultaneously. This power is called the soul or consciousness.
