सातावेदनीय - जिस कर्म के उदय से आत्मा को इन्द्रिय विषयसम्बन्धी सुख का अनुभव हो, उसे सातावेदनीय कर्म कहते हैं । असातावेदनीय- जिस कर्म के उदय से आत्मा को अनुकूल विषयों की अप्राप्ति और प्रतिकूल इन्द्रियविषयों की प्राप्ति में दुःख का अनुभव होता है, उसे असातावेदनीय कर्म कहते हैं ।

वेदनीय कर्म द्वारा आत्मा को जो सुख-दुःख का अनुभव होता है, वह इन्द्रियविषयजन्य सुख-दुःख समझना चाहिए। आत्मा को जो अपने स्वरूप के सुख की अनुभूति होती है, वह किसी भी कर्म के उदय से नहीं होती है। बेदनीय कर्मजन्य सुख-दुःख की अनुभूति क्षणिक होती है ।
गाथा में बेदनीय कर्म के लिए मधुलिप्त तलवार की धार का दृष्टान्त देकर यह सूचित किया गया है कि वैषयिकसुख दुःख से मिला हुआ ही है । उसमें निराकुलता नहीं होती है। परिणाम कलुप होते हैं, जो संसार बढ़ाने के कारण हैं ।
अब आगे की गाथा में चार गतियों में वेदनीय कर्म का स्वरूप बतलाते हुए मोहनीय कर्म की व्याख्या प्रारम्भ करते हैं।
