समास' यह संज्ञा है । अन्तिम अक्षरसमास श्रुतज्ञान के ऊपर एक अक्षरज्ञान के बढ़ने पर पदनामक श्रुतज्ञान होता है । "
अर्थपद, प्रमाणपद और मध्यमपद इस प्रकार पद तीन प्रकार का है। उनमें से जितने अक्षरों के द्वारा अर्थ का ज्ञान होता है। वह अर्थपद है वह अर्थपद अनवस्थित है, क्योंकि अनियत अक्षरों के द्वारा अर्थ का ज्ञान हो जाता है और यह बात प्रसिद्ध भी नहीं है, क्योंकि 'अ' का अर्थ विष्णु है, 'इ' का अर्थ काम है और 'क' का अर्थ ब्रह्मा है, इस प्रकार इत्यादि स्थलों पर एक-एक अक्षर से ही अर्थ की उपलब्धि होती है । आठ अक्षर से निष्पन्न हुआ प्रमाणपद है । यह अवस्थित है, क्योंकि इस की आठ संख्या नियत है ।

प्रथंपद---जैसे "सफेद गौ को रस्सी से बाँधो" या "अग्नि लाओ" या "छात्र को विद्या पढ़ाओ" थवा "वालक को दूध पिलाओ" इत्यादि ।
प्रमाणपद - श्लोक के चार पाद होते हैं। प्रत्येक पाद में आठ-आठ प्रक्षर होते हैं । प्रत्येक पाद की 'प्रमाणपद' संज्ञा है, क्योंकि प्रमाणपद की प्राठ संख्या नियत है ।
यहाँ पर न तो अर्थपद से प्रयोजन है और न प्रमाणपद से प्रयोजन है, किन्तु मध्यमपद से प्रयोजन है।

विशेषार्थ - सोलह सौ चौंतीस करोड़ तेरासी लाख, श्रहत्तर सौ अठासी ( १६३४८३०७८८८ ) ग्रक्षरों को लेकर द्रव्यश्रुल का एक पद होता है । इन अक्षरों से उत्पन्न हुआ भावश्रुत भी उपचार से 'पद' कहा जाता है।
