तरह कोई संघ नहीं है। उनके साधु प्रकृति की अवस्था में (State of nature) नग्न नदी किनारे रहते हैं और नंगे ही घूपते हैं। (Go about naked) उनके पास न चौपाहे हैं, न हल है, न लोहा-लंगड़ है, न घर है, न आग है, न रोटी है, न सुरा है - गर्ज यह कि उनके पास अप और आनन्द का कोई सामान नहीं है। इन साधुओं को स्त्रियां गंगा की दूसरी ओर रहती हैं, जिनके पास जुलाई और अगस्त में वे जाते हैं। वैसे जंगल में रहकर वे वनफल खाते हैं।"
सन् ८५१ में अरब देश से सुलेमान सौदागर भारत आया था। उसने यहाँ एक ऐसे नंगे हिन्दू योगी को देखा था जो सोलह वर्ष तक एक आसन से स्थित था।
बादशाह औरंगजेब के जमाने में फ्रांस से आये हए डा. बर्नियर ने भी हिन्दओं के रमहंस (गे मुन्टा न कोयला :) |ह इनों 'जोगी' कहता है और इनके विषय में लिखता है

Novices wait upon these fanatics and pay them the utmost respect, as persons endowed with cxtraordinary sanctity. No 'sury' in the infernal regions can be conceived more horrible than the Tavgise' with their naked and black skin, long, hair spindle arms, tong twisted nails and fixed in the posture which I have mentioned".
