The Twenty-Eighth Chapter Very deep, like a king, with many enjoyers on its shore. Like a great king, it is high, with boundaries. (11) It protects many inner islands, like a fortress, impregnable. (12) Filled with roaring, deep, sky-reaching waves, like a servant, it is filled with water. (13) With colored, moving, turbulent, and changing waves, like a possessed man, it is noisy and whirling. (14) Its bottom is painted with rays of light, its water is adorned with pearls, and it is full of crocodiles, making it both beautiful and frightening. (15) The river, rich in jewels, is ancient and long-lived. The ocean, like a king, is vast and eternal. (16) The ocean was not satisfied, just as a wicked king is surrounded by water (inert) i.e. foolish people, so too was the ocean constantly surrounded by water (water). And just as a wicked king scorns the guru (venerable sage), so too did the ocean scorn the guru (heavy objects) i.e. it drowned them. Or, the ocean seemed like a good king, because just as a good king is endowed with sattva (strength), so too was the ocean endowed with sattva (aquatic creatures). Just as a good king is very deep, so too was the ocean very deep. Just as many enjoyers (kings) are present near a good king, so too were many enjoyers (snakes) present on the shore of the ocean. Just as a good king's position is high, so too was the ocean's position high, i.e. its water was rising above the air. And just as a good king is endowed with maryada (appropriate conduct) that comes from his lineage, so too was the ocean endowed with maryada (boundaries). The ocean was protecting the many inner islands that resided within it. These inner islands seemed like impregnable and unstealable fortresses. The extremely deep ocean seemed as if it were filled with water by constantly rising, roaring, and sky-reaching clouds, like servants. ________________ अष्टाविंशतितमं पर्व ससत्त्वमतिगम्भीरं भोगिभितवेलकम् । सुराजानमिवात्युच्चैर्वृत्तिं मर्यादया पृतम् ॥११॥ अनेकमन्तरद्वीपमन्तनतिनमात्मनः । दुर्गदेशमिवाहार्यं पालयन्तमलङ्घनैः ॥१२॥ गर्जद्भिरतिगभीरं नभोव्यापिभिरूजितैः । आपूर्यमाणमम्भोभिनाधः किङ्कररिव ॥३॥ रङ्गितैश्चलितैः क्षोभैरूस्थितैश्च विवर्तनः । ग्रहाविष्टमिवोजम्मं सध्वानं च सघूर्णितम् ॥१४॥ रतांशुचित्रिततलं मुकाशवलिताणसम् । ग्राहरध्यासितं विप्वक्सुखालोकं च भीपणम् ॥१५॥ नदीनं रत्नभूयिष्ठमप्प्रागं चिरजीवितम् । समुद्रमपि चोन्मुद्रं 'झपकनुममन्मथम् ॥६६॥ पर भी सन्तुष्ट नहीं होता था, जिस प्रकार दुष्ट राजा जल (जड़) अर्थात् मूर्ख मनुष्योंसे घिरा रहता है उसी प्रकार वह समुद्र भी निरन्तर जल अर्थात् पानीसे घिरा रहता था, और जिस प्रकार दुष्ट राजा गुरु अर्थात् पूज्य महापुरुषोंका तिरस्कार करता है उसी प्रकार वह समद्र भी गुरु अर्थात् भारी वजनदार पदार्थों का तिरस्कार करता रहता था अर्थात् उन्हें डुबोता रहता था । अथवा वह समुद्र किसी उत्तम राजाके समान जान पड़ता था क्योंकि जिस प्रकार उत्तम राजा सत्त्व अर्थात् पराक्रमसे सहित होता है उसी प्रकार वह समुद्र भी सत्त्व अर्थात् जलजन्तुओंसे सहित था, जिस प्रकार उत्तम राजा अत्यन्त गम्भीर होता है उसी प्रकार वह समुद्र भी अत्यन्त गम्भीर अर्थात् गहरा था, जिस प्रकार उत्तम राजाके समीप अनेक भोगी अर्थात् राजा लोग विद्यमान रहते हैं उसी प्रकार उस समद्रकी बेला (तट) पर भी अनेक भोगी अर्थात सर्प विद्यमान रहते थे, जिस प्रकार उत्तम राजाकी वृत्ति उच्च होती है उसी प्रकार उस समुद्रकी वत्ति भी उच्च थी अर्थात उसका जल हवासे ऊँचा उठ रहा था और जिस प्रकार उत्तम र मर्यादा अर्थात् कुल-परम्परासे आयी हुई समीचीन पद्धतिसे सहित होता है उसी प्रकार वह समुद्र भी मर्यादा अर्थात् पालीसे सहित था। वह समुद्र अपने मध्यमें रहनेवाले अनेक अन्तर्वीपोंकी रक्षा कर रहा था वे अन्तद्वीप उसके अलंघनीय तथा हरण करनेके अयोग्य किलोंके समान जान पड़ते थे। वह अतिशय गम्भीर समुद्र ऐसा जान पड़ता था मानो सेवकोंके समान निरन्तर बढ़ते हुए, गरजते हुए और आकाशमें फैले हुए मेघोके द्वारा ही जलसे भरा गया हो अथवा वह समुद्र किसी ग्रहाविष्ट अर्थात् भूत लगे हुए मनुष्यके समान जान पड़ता था क्योंकि जिस प्रकार ग्रहाविष्ट मनुष्य जमीनपर रेंगता है, चलता है, क्षुब्ध होता है, ऊँचा उछलता है और इधरउधर घूमता है अथवा करवटें बदलता है उसी प्रकार वह समुद्र भी लहरोंसे पृथिवीपर रेंग रहा था, चल रहा था, क्षुब्ध था, ऊँचा उछलता और इधर-उधर घूमता था अर्थात् कभी इधर लहरता था तो कभी उधर लहरता था, तथा ग्रहाविष्ट मनुष्य जिस प्रकार उज्जृम्भ अर्थात् उठती हुई जमुहाइयोंसे सहित होता है उसी प्रकार वह समुद्र भी उज्जृम्भ अर्थात् उठती हुई लहरोंसे सहित था, जिस प्रकार ग्रहाविष्ट मनुष्य शब्द करता है उसी प्रकार समुद्र भी शब्द कर रहा था और जिस प्रकार ग्रहाविष्ट मनुष्य काँपता रहता है उसी प्रकार वह समद्र भी वायुसे काँपता रहता था। उस समुद्रका तल भाग रत्नोंकी किरणोंसे चित्र-विचित्र हो रहा था, उसका जल मोतियोंसे चित्रित था, और वह चारों ओर मगरमच्छोंसे भरा हुआ था इसलिए वह देखनेमें अच्छा भी लगता था और भयानक भी मालूम होता था। वह समुद्र अनेक रत्नोंसे १ भूप्रसर्पणः । २ चलनः । ३ उत्थानः । ४ भ्रमणः । ५ उज्जम्भणम् । पक्षे जम्भिकासहितम् । ६ सरित्पतिम् । निस्वसदृशम् । 'नभात्रे निषेधे च स्वरूपार्थे व्यतिक्रमे । ईषदर्थे च सादृश्ये तद्विरुद्धतदन्ययोः ॥' इत्यभिधानात् । ७ आपः प्राणं यस्य स तम् । पक्षे गतप्राणम् । ८ चिरकालस्थायिनम् । -जीविनम् अ०, ५०, ब०, स०, इ० । ९ मुद्रया सहितम् । १० मुद्रारहितम् । महान्तमित्यर्थः । ११ झषाङ्कितम् । १२ मत् मनो मथ्नातीति मन्मथः न मन्मथः अमन्मथस्तं मनोहरमित्यर्थः । नोहरमित्यर्थ महान्तमित चिरकालस्था सादृश्ये
