आदिपुराणम्
अकस्मादुच्चरध्वानमनिमित्तचलाचलम् । अकारणकृतावर्तमति सकुसुकस्थितिम् ॥७२॥ हसन्तमित्र फेनोधैर्लसन्तमिव वीचिभिः । चलन्तमित्र कल्लोलैर्माद्यन्तमिव घूर्णितैः ॥ ७३ ॥ सन्नमुल्बणविषं मुक्तशुल्कारमीकरम् । स्फुरतरङ्गनिर्मोकं स्फुरन्तमित्र भोगिनम् ॥७४॥ " अन्य स्वपानादुद्विक्तप्रतिश्यायमिवाधिकम् । क्षुतानीव विकुर्वाणं ध्वनितानि सहस्रशः ॥ ७५ ॥ "आनमसकृत्पीतविश्वस्रोतस्विनीरसम् । रसातिरेकादुद्गारं तन्वानमिव खात्कृतैः ॥७६॥ निजगम्भीरपातालमहागर्तापदेशतः । अवृष्यन्तमिवाम्भोभिरातालुविवृताननम् ॥७७॥
के रोगी के समान जान पड़ता था क्योंकि जिस प्रकार अपस्मारका रोगी फेनसहित आती हुई भिकाओं अर्थात् जमुहाइयोंसे व्याकुल रहता है उसी प्रकार वह समुद्र भी फेनसहित उठती हुई जृम्भिका अर्थात् लहरोंमे व्याकुल था, जिस प्रकार अपस्मारका रोगी किसीके द्वारा पकड़कर नहीं रखा जा सकता उसी प्रकार वह समुद्र भी किसीके द्वारा नहीं रोका जा सकता और . जिस प्रकार अपस्मारका रोगी किसी भी जगह स्थिर नहीं रहता इसी प्रकार वह समुद्र भी किसी जगह स्थिर नहीं था - लहरोंके कारण चंचल हो रहा था। वह समुद्र अकस्मात् ही गम्भीर शब्द करता था, बिना कारण ही चंचल था और बिना कारण ही उसमें आवर्त अर्थात् भँवर पड़ते थे, इसलिए उसकी दशा किसी अत्यन्त अस्थिर मनुष्यसे भी बढ़कर हो रही थी क्योंकि अत्यन्त अस्थिर मनुष्य भी अचानक शब्द करने लगता है, चिल्ला उठता है, बिना कारण ही काँपने लगता है, और बिना कारण ही आवर्त करने लगता है, इधर-उधर भागने लगता है । वह समुद्र फेन उठनेसे ऐसा जान पड़ता था मानो हँस ही रहा हो, ज्वार-भाटाओंसे ऐसा मालूम होता था मानो लास्य ( नृत्य ) ही कर रहा हो, लहरोंसे ऐसा सुशोभित होता था मानो चल ही रहा हो और हिलनेसे ऐसा दिखाई देता था मानो नशेमें झूम ही रहा हो अथवा वह समुद्र किसी सर्प के समान जान पड़ता था क्योंकि जिस प्रकार सर्प रत्नसहित होता है उसी प्रकार वह समुद्र भी रत्नसहित था, जिस प्रकार सर्प में उत्कट विष अर्थात् जहर रहता है उसी प्रकार समुद्र में भी उत्कट विष अर्थात् जल था, जिस प्रकार सर्प सू सू आदि फुंकारोंसे भयंकर होता है उसी प्रकार वह समुद्र भी सू सू आदि शब्दोंसे भयंकर था, जिस प्रकार सर्पके देदीप्यमान कांची होती है उसी प्रकार उस समुद्र के भी देदीप्यमान लहरें थीं, और जिस प्रकार सर्प चंचल रहता है उसी प्रकार वह समुद्र भी चंचल था । अथवा वह समुद्र ऐसा जान पड़ता था मानो अधिक पानी पीने से उसे सर्दी ( जुकाम) ही हो गयी हो और इसीलिए हजारों शब्दोंके बहाने छींकें ही ले रहा हो । अथवा वह समुद्र किसी आद्यून अर्थात् बहुत खानेवाले - पेटू मनुष्यके समान जान पड़ता था, क्योंकि जिस प्रकार आद्यून मनुष्य बहुत खाता है और बादमें भोजनकी अधिकता होनेसे डकारें लेता है उसी प्रकार उस समुद्रने भी समस्त नदियों का जल पी लिया था और बादमें जलकी अधिकता होनेसे वह भी शब्दोंके बहाने डकारें ले रहा था। वह समुद्र अपने गम्भीर पातालरूपी महाउदरके बहानेसे जलसे कभी तृप्त नहीं होता था और इसीलिए मानो उसने तालु पर्यन्त अपना मुख खोल रखा था । भावार्थ- वह समुद्र किसी ऐसे मनुष्य के समान जान पड़ता था जो बहुत खानेपर भो तृप्त नहीं होता, क्योंकि जिस प्रकार तृप्त नहीं होनेवाला मनुष्य बहुत कुछ खाकर भी तृष्णासे अपना मुख खोले रहता है उसी प्रकार वह समुद्र भी बहुत कुछ जल ग्रहण कर चुकनेपर भी तृष्णासे अपना मुख खोले रहता था - नदियों
१ चञ्चलम् । २ नितराम् अस्थिरस्थितिम् । 'असंकुसुकोऽस्थिरे' इत्यमरः । विशेषनिघ्नवर्गः । ३ नृत्यन्तम् । ४ उत्कटजलम् । ५ सीकरम प० । ६ उत्कटपीनसम् ' प्रतिश्यायस्तु पीनसः' इत्यभिधानात् । ७ औदरिकम् । तृप्तिरहितमित्यर्थः । ८-गर्भाप-ल० ।

It was like a sick man, for just as an epileptic is troubled by the frothy waves, so too was the ocean troubled by the frothy waves. Just as an epileptic cannot be held by anyone, so too could the ocean not be held by anyone. And just as an epileptic does not remain still in any place, so too did the ocean not remain still in any place - it was restless due to the waves. The ocean suddenly made a deep sound, it was restless without reason, and whirlpools formed in it without reason. Therefore, its condition was worse than that of a very unstable person, because even a very unstable person suddenly starts to make sounds, shouts, trembles without reason, and starts to whirl around, running here and there. The ocean seemed to be laughing because of the rising foam, it seemed to be dancing because of the tides, it seemed to be moving because of the waves, and it seemed to be intoxicated because of the swaying. Or, the ocean seemed like a serpent, for just as a serpent has jewels, so too did the ocean have jewels. Just as a serpent has potent poison, so too did the ocean have potent poison, that is, water. Just as a serpent is fearsome because of its hissing, so too was the ocean fearsome because of its hissing. Just as a serpent has shining scales, so too did the ocean have shining waves. And just as a serpent is restless, so too was the ocean restless. Or, the ocean seemed as if it had a cold (runny nose) from drinking too much water, and therefore it was sneezing with thousands of sounds. Or, the ocean seemed like a glutton, for just as a glutton eats a lot and then burps because of the excess food, so too did the ocean drink the water of all the rivers and then burped with sounds because of the excess water. The ocean was never satisfied with the water from its deep, vast belly, and therefore it seemed to have opened its mouth up to the palate. Meaning - The ocean seemed like a man who is never satisfied, even after eating a lot, because just as a man who is not satisfied keeps his mouth open because of thirst, even after eating a lot, so too did the ocean keep its mouth open because of thirst, even after drinking a lot of water - the rivers
