आदिपुराणम्
हारिमेदुरमुद्रिकुसुमं सनि कामदम् । सुकलश्रमिवासीत्तत् सेभ्यं वनचतुष्टयम् ॥ १७८ ॥ अपास्तातपसंबन्धं विकसत्पल्लवाञ्चितम् । पयोधरस्पृगामासि तत्स्त्रीणामुत्तरीयवत् ॥ १७९ ॥ श्रमासे वनमाशोकं शोकापनुदमङ्गिनाम् । रागं वमदिवात्मीयमारक्तैः पुष्पपल्लवः ॥ ३८० ॥ पर्णानि सप्त बिभ्राणं वनं साप्तच्छदं वमाँ । सप्तस्थानानि वामदर्शयत्प्रतिपर्व यत् ॥ १८३॥ चम्पकं वनमत्रामात् सुमनोभरभूषणम् । वनं दीपाङ्गवृक्षाणां विभुं मक्तु मिवागताम् ॥ १८२ ॥ ""कश्रमाश्रवनं रेजे कलकण्ठीकलस्वनैः । स्तुवानमिव भक्त्यैनमीशानं " पुण्यशासनम् ॥ १८३॥ अशोकवन मध्येऽभूदशोकानोकहो महान् । हैमं' ३ त्रिमंखलं पीठं समुत्तुङ्गमधिष्ठितः ॥ १८४॥ चतुर्गोपुरसंबद्धत्रिसालपरिवेष्टितः । छत्रचामरभृङ्गारकलश | यैरुपस्कृतः ॥ १८५ ॥ जम्बूद्वीपस्थलीमध्ये भाति जम्बू द्रुमो यथा । तथा वनस्थलीमध्ये स बभौ चैत्यपादपः ॥ १८६॥

वे चारों ही वन उत्तम स्त्रियोंके समान सेवन करने योग्य थे क्योंकि वे वन भी उत्तम स्त्रियोंके समान ही मनोहर थे, मेदुर अर्थात् अतिशय चिकने थे, उन्निद्रकुसुम अर्थात् फूले हुए फूलोंसे सहित (पक्ष में ऋतुधर्मसे सहित ) थे, सश्री अर्थात् शोभासे सहित थे, और कामद अर्थात् इच्छित पदार्थोंके ( पक्ष में कामके) देनेवाले थे ।। १७८ ॥ अथवा वे वन स्त्रियोंके उत्तरीय (ओदनेकी चूनरी ) बखके समान सुशोभित हो रहे थे क्योंकि जिस प्रकार स्त्रियोंका उत्तरीय वस्त्र आतपकी बाधाको नष्ट कर देता है उसी प्रकार उन वनांने भी आतपकी बाधाको कर दिया था, स्त्रियोंका उत्तरीय वस्त्र जिस प्रकार उत्तम पल्लव अर्थात् अंचल से सुशोभित होता है उसी प्रकार वे वन भी पल्लव अर्थात् नवीन कोमल पत्तोंसे सुशोभित हो रहे थे और स्त्रियोंका उत्तरीय वस्त्र जिस प्रकार पयोधर अर्थात् स्तनोंका स्पर्श करता है उसी प्रकार वे वन भी ऊँचे होनेके कारण पयोधर अर्थात् मेघोंका स्पर्श कर रहे थे || १७९ ॥ उन चारों वनों में से पहला अशोक वन जो कि प्राणियोंके शोकको नष्ट करनेवाला था, लाल रंगके फूल और नवीन पत्तोंसे ऐसा सुशोभित हो रहा था मानो अपने अनुराग (प्रेम) का ही वमन कर रहा हो || १८०|| प्रत्येक गाँठ पर सात-सात पत्तोंको धारण करनेवाले सप्तच्छद वृक्षोंका दूसरा वन भी सुशोभित हो रहा था जो कि ऐसा जान पड़ता था मानो वृक्षोंके प्रत्येक पर्व पर भगवान् के सज्जातित्व सद्गृहस्थत्व पारित्राज्य आदि सात परम स्थानोंको ही दिखा रहा हो || १८१|| फूलोंके भारसे सुशोभित तीसरा चम्पक वृक्षोंका वन भी सुशोभित हो रहा था और वह ऐसा जान पड़ता था मानो भगवानको सेवा करने के लिए दीपांग जाति के कल्पवृक्षोंका वन ही आया हो ॥ १८२॥ तथा कोयलोंके मधुर शब्दोंसे मनोहर चौथा आम के वृक्षोंका वन भी ऐसा सुशोभित हो रहा था मानो पवित्र उपदेश देनेवाले भगवान्की भक्ति स्तुति ही कर रहा हो || १८३ || अशोक वनके मध्य भागमें एक बड़ा भारी अशोकका वृक्ष था जो कि सुवर्णकी बनी हुई तीन कटनीदार ऊँची पीठिकापर स्थित था ॥ १८४ ॥ वह वृक्ष, जिनमें चार-चार गोपुरद्वार बने हुए हैं ऐसे तीन कोटोंसे घिरा हुआ था तथा उसके समीपमें ही छत्र, चमर, भृङ्गार और कलश आदि मंगलद्रव्य रखे हुए थे ॥ १८५ ॥ जिस प्रकार जम्बूद्वीपकी मध्यभूमिमें जम्बू वृक्ष सुशोभित होता है। उसी प्रकार उस अशोकवनकी मध्यभूमिमें वह अशोक नामक चैत्यवृक्ष सुशो

The four forests were worthy of being served like excellent women, for they were beautiful like excellent women, *medur* (extremely smooth), *unnidra kusuma* (with blooming flowers, in the context, with the season of menstruation), *sashri* (with splendor), and *kamad* (giving desired things, in the context, giving love). || 178 ||

Of those four forests, the first was the *ashoka* forest, which destroyed the sorrow of beings, and was adorned with red flowers and new leaves, as if it were vomiting its own love (affection). || 180 ||

The second forest, of *saptachchada* trees, which bore seven leaves on each knot, was also adorned, and it seemed as if it were showing the seven supreme places of the Lord, such as *sajatitva*, *sadgrihasthattva*, *paritrajya*, etc., on each knot of the trees. || 181 ||

The third forest of *champaka* trees, adorned with the weight of flowers, was also adorned, and it seemed as if the forest of *dipaanga* class of *kalpavriksha* trees had come to serve the Lord. || 182 ||

And the fourth forest of mango trees, beautiful with the sweet sounds of cuckoos, was also adorned, as if it were praising the Lord who gives pure teachings. || 183 ||

In the middle of the *ashoka* forest, there was a large *ashoka* tree, which was situated on a high platform made of gold with three cuts. || 184 ||

That tree was surrounded by three *kotas* (forts) in which there were four gates, and near it were placed auspicious things like *chhatra* (umbrella), *chamara* (fly whisk), *bhriṅgāra* (perfume), and *kalasha* (pot). || 185 ||

Just as the *jambu* tree is adorned in the middle of the *jambu* island, so too was that *ashoka* tree, called *chaitavriksha*, adorned in the middle of that *ashoka* forest. || 186 ||
