महापुराणम् कुमानुपस्वमाप्नोति जन्तुर्दददपात्रके । अशोधितमित्रालाबु तद्धि दानं प्रदूषयेत् ॥१४२।। आमपात्रे यथाक्षिप्तं मधु क्षीरादि नश्यति । अपात्रेऽपि तथा दत्तं तद्धि स्वं. तवं नाशयेत् ॥१४॥ पात्रं तत्पात्र वजज्ञेयं विशुद्धगुणधारणात् । यानपात्रमिवाभीष्टदेश संप्रापकं च यत् ॥१४॥ न हि लोहमयं यानपात्रमुत्तारयेत् परम् । तथा कर्ममराक्रान्तो दोषवान्नैव तारकः ॥१४५॥ ततः परमनिर्वाणसाधनं रूपमुहहन् । कायस्थित्यर्थमाहारमिच्छन् ज्ञानादिसिद्धये ॥१४६।। न वाम्छन् बलमायुर्वा स्वाद वा देहपोषणम् । केवलं प्राणप्रत्यर्थ संतुष्टो पासमात्रया ॥१४॥ पात्रं भवेद् गुणरेभिर्मनिः स्वपरतारकः । तस्मै दत्तं पुना त्यामपुनर्जन्मकारवाम् ॥१४॥
तदुदाहरणं पुष्ट मिदमेव महोदयम् । महत्त्वे दानपुण्यस्य पन्था 'श्चर्यमिहापि यत् ।।१४९॥ "ततो भरत राजर्षे दानं देयमनुत्तरम् । प्रसरिष्यन्ति" पात्राणि मगवतीर्थसंनिधौ ॥१५॥
तेभ्यः श्रेयान् यथाचल्यो स्व"मर्नुभवविस्तरम् । ततः सदस्या "स्ते सर्वे समानरुपयोऽभवन ॥१५॥ से रहित मिथ्यादृष्टि है वह पात्र नहीं माना गया है अर्थात् अपात्र है ॥१४१॥ जो मनुष्य अपात्रके लिए दान देता है वह कुमनुष्य योनि (कुभोगभूमि) में उत्पन्न होता है क्योंकि जिस प्रकार बिना शुद्धि की हुई तूंबी अपनेमें रखे हुए दूध आदिको दूषित कर देती है उसी प्रकार अपात्र अपने लिए दिये हुए दानको दूषित कर देता है ॥१४२॥ जिस प्रकार कच्चे बरतनमें रखा हुआ ईखका रस अथवा दूध स्वयं नष्ट हो जाता है और उस बरतनको भी नष्ट कर देता है उसी प्रकार अपात्रके लिए दिया हुआ दान स्वयं नष्ट हो जाता है-व्यर्थ जाता है और लेनेवाले पात्रको भी नष्ट कर देता है-अहंकारादिसे युक्त बनाकर विषय-वासनाओंमें फँसा देता है ॥१४३॥ जो अनेक विशुद्ध गुणोंको धारण करनेसे पात्रके समान हो वही पात्र कहलाता है। इसी प्रकार जो जहाजके समान इष्ट स्थानमें पहुँचानेवाला हो वही पात्र कहलाता है ॥१४४॥ जिस प्रकार लोहेकी बनी हुई नाव समुद्रसे दूसरेको पार नहीं कर सकतो (और न स्वयं ही पार हो सकती है) इसी प्रकार कर्मोंके भारसे दबा हुआ दोषवान् पात्र किसीको संसार-समुद्रसे पार नहीं कर सकता (और न स्वयं ही पार हो सकता है) ॥१४५॥ इसलिए, जो मोक्षके साधनस्वरूप दिगम्बर वेषको धारण करते हैं, जो शरीरको स्थिति और ज्ञानादि गुणोंकी सिद्धिके लिए आहारकी इच्छा करते हैं, जो बल, आयु, स्वाद अथवा शरीरको पुष्ट करनेकी इच्छा नहीं करते, जो केवल प्राणधारण करनेके लिए थोड़े-से प्रासोंसे हो सन्तुष्ट हो जाते हैं, और जो निज तथा परको तारनेवाले हैं ऐसे ऊपर लिखेहए गणोंसे सहित मनिराज ही पात्र हो सकते हैं उनके लिए दिया हुआ आहार अपुनर्भव अर्थात् मोक्षका कारण है ॥१४६-१४८॥ दानरूपी पुण्यके माहात्म्यको प्रकट करनेके लिए, सबसे बड़ा और पुष्ट उदाहरण यही है कि मैंने दानके माहात्म्यसे हो पञ्चाश्चर्य प्राप्त किये हैं ।। १४९ ।। इसलिए हे राजर्षि भरत, हम सबको उत्तम दान देना चाहिए । अब भगवान् वृषभदेवके तीर्थके समय सब जगह पात्र फैल जायेंगे। भावार्थ-भगवान्के सदुपदेशसे अनेक मनुष्य मुनिव्रत धारण करेंगे, उन सभीके लिए हमें आहार आदि दान देना चाहिए ॥१५०॥ राजकुमार श्रेयान्सने उन सब सदस्योंके लिए अपने स्वामी भगवान् वृषभदेवके पूर्वभव विस्तारके साथ कहे जिससे उन सबके उत्तम दान देने में रुचि उत्पन्न

A being who gives to the unworthy attains the womb of a wicked being (ku-bhoga-bhumi). Just as a vessel that is not purified contaminates the milk and other things kept in it, so too does the unworthy contaminate the gift given to him. ||142||

Just as honey, milk, etc., kept in an unbaked vessel perish and also destroy the vessel, so too does a gift given to the unworthy perish itself and also destroys the recipient. ||143||

That which is worthy of being a vessel is known by its possession of pure qualities, just as a vessel is known by its ability to carry. ||144||

Just as a vessel made of iron cannot carry anyone across the ocean (nor can it cross itself), so too a person burdened with the weight of karma and full of faults cannot liberate anyone from the ocean of samsara (nor can he liberate himself). ||145||

Therefore, those who wear the Digambara garb, which is the means of attaining liberation, who desire food for the sake of maintaining their body and attaining knowledge and other virtues, who do not desire strength, longevity, taste, or nourishment for the body, who are content with just enough food to sustain their life, and who are capable of liberating themselves and others, are the only ones who are worthy of receiving gifts. The food given to them is the cause of liberation, i.e., it leads to the cessation of rebirth. ||146-148||

This is the most powerful and convincing example to illustrate the greatness of the virtue of giving. It is indeed a wonder that I have attained the five wonders through the greatness of giving. ||149||

Therefore, O King Bharata, we should all give the best gifts. Now, at the time of the Tirtha of Lord Vrishabhadeva, the worthy will spread everywhere. Meaning: Due to the Lord's good advice, many people will adopt the Muni vows. We should give them food and other gifts. ||150||

Prince Shreyans, with the details of his own past lives, spoke to all those members, which aroused their interest in giving the best gifts. ||151||
