आदिपुराणम्
नरकेषु बिलानि स्युः प्रज्वलन्ति महान्ति च । नारका येषु पच्यन्ते कुम्मीष्विव दुरात्मकाः ॥ ९२ ॥ एकं त्रीणि तथा सप्त दश सप्तदशापि च । द्वाविंशतिस्त्रयस्त्रिंशदायुस्तत्राब्धिसंख्यया ॥९३॥ धनूंषि सप्ततिस्रः स्युररम्योऽङ्गुलयश्च षट् । धर्मायां नारकोत्सेधो द्विद्विशेषासु लक्ष्यताम् ॥९४॥ उपोगण्डा हुण्डसंस्थाना: षण्डकाः पूतिगन्धयः । दुर्वर्णाश्चैव दुःस्पर्शा दुःस्वश दुर्भगाश्च ते ॥ ९५ ॥ तमोमयैरिवारब्धा विरूक्षः परमाणुभिः । जायन्ते कालकालामाः नारका द्रव्यलेश्यया ॥ ९६ ॥ भावलेश्या तु ती जघन्या मध्यमोत्तमा । नीला च मध्यमा नीला नीलोत्कृष्टा च कृष्णया ॥९७॥ कृष्णा च मध्यमोत्कृष्टा कृष्णा चेति यथाक्रमम् । धर्मादिसप्तमीं यावत् तावत्पृथिवीषु वर्णिताः ॥ ९८ ॥ यादृशः कटुकालाबुकाओ। दिसमागमे । रसः कटुरनिष्टश्च तद्गात्रेष्वपि तादृशः ॥ ९९ ॥ श्वमार्जारखरोष्ट्रादिकुणपानां 'समाहृतौ । यद्वैगन्ध्यं तदप्येषां देहगन्धस्य नोपमा ॥ १०० ॥ यादृशः करपत्रेषु' गोक्षुरेषु च यादृशः । तादृशः कर्कशः स्पर्शः तदङ्गेष्वपि जायते ॥१०१॥

पाँच कम एक लाख और पाँच बिल हैं। ये बिल सदा ही जाज्वल्यमान रहते हैं और बड़ेबड़े हैं। इन बिलोंमें पापी नारकी जीव हमेशा कुम्भीपाक ( बन्द घड़े में पकाये जानेवाले जल आदि) के समान पकते रहते हैं ।। ९१-९२ ॥ उन नरकोंमें क्रमसे एक सागर, तीन सागर, सात सागर, दस सागर, सत्रह सागर, बाईस सागर और तैंतीस सागर की उत्कृष्ट आयु है || ९३|| पहली पृथिवीमें नारकियोंके शरीरकी ऊँचाई सात धनुष तीन हाथ और छह अंगुल है । और द्वितीय आदि पृथिवियोंमें क्रम-क्रमसे दूनी- दूनी समझनी चाहिए। अर्थात् दूसरी पृथिवीमें पन्द्रह धनुष दो हाथ बारह अंगुल, तीसरी पृथिवीमें इकतीस धनुष एक हाथ, चौथी पृथिवीमें बासठ धनुष दो हाथ, पाँचवीं पृथिवीमें एक सौ पच्चीस धनुष, छठी पृथिवीमें दो सौ पचास हाथ और सातवीं पृथिवीमें पाँच सौ धनुष शरीर की ऊँचाई है ॥९४ || वे नारकी विकलांग, हुण्डक संस्थानवाले, नपुंसक, दुर्गन्धयुक्त, बुरे काले रंगके धारक, कठिन स्पर्शवाले, कठोर स्वरसहित तथा दुर्भग ( देखनेमें अप्रिय ) होते हैं ||१५|| उन नारकियोंका शरीर अन्धकारके समान काले और रूखे परमाणुओंसे बना हुआ होता है। उन सबकी द्रव्यलेश्या अत्यन्त कृष्ण होती है ||१६|| परन्तु भावलेश्यामें अन्तर है जो कि इस प्रकार है - पहली पृथिवीमें जघन्य कापोती भावलेश्या है, दूसरी पृथिवीमें मध्यम कापोती लेश्या है, तीसरी पृथिवीमें उत्कृष्ट कापोती लेश्या और जघन्य नील लेश्या है, चौथी पृथिवीमें मध्यम नील लेश्या है, पाँचवीं में उत्कृष्ट नील तथा जघन्य कृष्ण लेश्या है, छठी पृथिवीमें मध्यम कृष्ण लेश्या है और सातवीं पृथिवीमें उत्कृष्ट कृष्ण लेश्या है । इस प्रकार घर्मा आदि सात पृथिवियोंमें क्रमसे भावलेश्याका वर्णन किया ||९७-९८ || कडुई तुम्बी और कांजीरके संयोगसे जैसा कडुआ और अष्ट रस उत्पन्न होता है वैसा ही रस नारकियोंके शरीर में भी उत्पन्न होता है ॥ ९९ ॥ कुत्ता, बिलाव, गधा, ऊँट आदि जीवोंके मृतक कलेवरोंको इकट्ठा करनेसे जो दुर्गन्ध उत्पन्न होती है वह भी इन नारकियोंके शरीरकी दुर्गन्धकी बराबरी नहीं कर सकती ।। १०० ॥ करोंत और गोखुरू में जैसा कठोर स्पर्श होता है वैसा ही कठोर स्पर्श नार

There are many blazing pits in hell, which are very large. The wicked beings of hell are roasted in them like the contents of a pot. || 92 ||

There are one, three, seven, ten, seventeen, twenty-two, and thirty-three oceans of lifespan in those hells. || 93 ||

The height of the bodies of the hell beings in the first earth is seven bows, three hands, and six fingers. And in the second and subsequent earths, it should be understood as doubled. That is, in the second earth, it is fifteen bows, two hands, twelve fingers, in the third earth, it is thirty-one bows, one hand, in the fourth earth, it is sixty-two bows, two hands, in the fifth earth, it is one hundred and twenty-five bows, in the sixth earth, it is two hundred and fifty hands, and in the seventh earth, it is five hundred bows. || 94 ||

Those hell beings are deformed, with a hunched posture, impotent, foul-smelling, dark-skinned, rough to the touch, harsh-voiced, and ugly. || 95 ||

Their bodies are made of dark and rough atoms, like darkness. Their dravya-leshya is extremely black. || 96 ||

But there is a difference in their bhava-leshya, which is as follows: In the first earth, there is the lowest kapoti bhava-leshya, in the second earth, there is the middle kapoti leshya, in the third earth, there is the highest kapoti leshya and the lowest nila leshya, in the fourth earth, there is the middle nila leshya, in the fifth earth, there is the highest nila and the lowest krishna leshya, in the sixth earth, there is the middle krishna leshya, and in the seventh earth, there is the highest krishna leshya. Thus, the bhava-leshya is described in the seven earths, starting with Dharma. || 97-98 ||

Just as a bitter taste and eight tastes are produced from the combination of bitter gourd, brinjal, and tamarind, so too is the same taste produced in the bodies of the hell beings. || 99 ||

The stench that arises from collecting the dead bodies of dogs, cats, donkeys, camels, and other animals cannot compare to the stench of the bodies of these hell beings. || 100 ||

Just as there is a rough touch in thorns and gokhuru, so too is there a rough touch in their bodies. || 101 ||
