सैषा बैतरणी नाम सरित् सारुष्करद्वा। आस्तां तरणमेतस्याः स्मरणं च भयावहम् ॥ ८॥ एते च नारकावासाः प्रज्वलन्त्यन्तरूष्मणा । अन्धमूषास्विवावर्त नीयन्ते यत्र नारकाः ॥८॥ दुस्सहा वेदनास्तोवाः प्रहारा दुर्धरा इमे । अकाले दुस्स्यजाः प्राणा दुर्निवाराश्च नारकाः ॥८२॥ क्व यामः क्व नु तिष्ठामः क्वास्महे क्व नु शेमहे । यत्र यत्रोपसर्पामस्तत्र तत्राधयोऽधिकाः ॥४३॥ इत्यपारमिदं दुःखं तरिष्यामः कदा वयम् । नाब्धयोऽप्युपमानं नो जीवितस्यालधीयसः ॥८॥ इत्यनुध्यायतां तेषां योऽन्तस्तापोऽनुसन्ततः । स एव प्राणसंशीति तानारोपयितुं क्षमः ॥८५॥ किमत्र बहुनोक्तेन यद्यदुःखं सुदारुणम् । तत्तस्पिण्डोकृतं तेषु दुर्मोचैः पापकर्मभिः ॥८६॥ अक्ष्णोनिमेषमानं च न तेषां सुखसंगतिः । दुःखमेवानुबन्धीग नारकाणामहर्निशम् ॥८७॥ नानादुःखशतावर्ते मग्नानां नरकार्णवे । तेषामास्तां सुखावाप्तिस्तस्मृतिश्च दवीयसी ॥४॥ शीतोष्णनरकेष्वेषां दुःखं यदुपजायते । तदसामचिन्स्यं च बत केनोपमीयते ॥८९॥ शीतं षष्टयां च सप्तम्यां पञ्चम्यां तदद्वयं मतम् । पृथिवीपूष्णमुदिष्ट चतसृथ्वादिमासु च ॥९॥ त्रिंशत्पञ्चहताः पञ्चत्रिपञ्च दश च क्रमात् । तिस्रः पञ्चमिरूनैका लक्षाः पञ्च च सप्तसु ॥९॥ है जिसकी याद आते ही हम लोगोंके समस्त अंग काँटे चुभनेके समान दुःखी होने लगते हैं।।७।। इधर यह भिलावेके रससे भरी हुई वैतरणी नामकी नदी है। इसमें तैरना तो दूर रहा इसका स्मरण करना भी भयका देनेवाला है ।।८।। ये वही नारकियोंके रहनेके घर (बिल) हैं जो कि गरमीसे भीतर-ही-भीतर जल रहे हैं और जिनमें ये नारकी छिद्ररहित साँचेमें गली हुई सुवणं, चांदी आदिधातुआकी तरह घुमाये जाते है ।।८।। यहाँको वेदना इतनी तोत्र है कि उसे कोई सह नहीं सकता, मार भी इतनी कठिन है कि उसे कोई बरदाश्त नहीं कर सकता । ये प्राण भी आयु पूर्ण हुए बिना छूट नहीं सकते और ये नारकी भी किसीसे रोके नहीं जा सकते ।।८२॥ ऐसी अवस्था में हम लोग कहाँ जायें ? कहाँ खड़े हों ? कहाँ बैठे ? और कहाँ सोवें ? हम लोग जहाँ-जहाँ जाते हैं वहाँ-वहाँ अधिक-ही-अधिक दुःख पाते हैं ।।८।। इस प्रकार यहाँ के इस अपार दुःखसे हम कब तिरेंगे ?-कब पार होंगे? हम लोगोंकी आयु भी इतनी अधिक है कि सागर भी उसके उपमान नहीं हो सकते ॥८४॥ इस प्रकार प्रतिक्षण चिन्तवन करते हुए नारकियोंको जो निरन्तर मानसिक सन्ताप होता रहता है वही उनके प्राणोंको संशयमें डाले रखनेके लिए समर्थ है अर्थात् उक्त प्रकारके सन्तापसे उन्हें मरनेका संशय बना रहता है ।।८५।। इस विषयमें और अधिक कहनेसे क्या लाभ है ? इतना ही पर्याप्त है, कि संसारमें जो-जो भयंकर दुःख होते हैं उन सभीको, कठिनतासे दूर होने योग्य कर्मोंने नरकोंमें इकट्ठा कर दिया है ॥८६॥ उन नारकियोंको नेत्रोंके निमेष मात्र भी सुख नहीं है। उन्हें रात-दिन इसी प्रकार दुःख-ही-दुःख भोगना पड़ता है ।।८७॥ नाना प्रकारके दुःखरूपी सैकड़ों आवतोंसे भरे हुए नरकरूपी समुद्रमें डूबे हुए नारकियोंको सुखकी प्राप्ति तो दूर रही उसका स्मरण होना भी बहुत दूर रहता है ।।८८|| शीत अथवा उष्ण नरकोंमें इन नारकियोंको जो दुःख होता है वह सर्वथा असह्य और अचिन्त्य है। संसारमें ऐसा कोई पदार्थ भी तो नहीं है जिसके साथ उस दुःखकी उपमा दी जा सके ।।८९॥ पहलेकी चार पृथिवियोंमें उष्ण वेदना है। पाँचवीं पृथिवीमें उष्ण और शीत दोनों वेदनाएँ हैं अर्थात् ऊपरके दो लाख बिलोंमें उष्ण वेदना है और नीचेके एक लाख बिलोंमें शीत वेदना है। छठी और सातवीं पृथिवीमें शीत वेदना है । यह उष्ण और शोतको वेदना नोचे-नीचेके नरकोंमें क्रम-क्रमसे बढ़ती हुई है।।९।। उन सातों पृथिवियोंमें क्रमसे तीस लाख, पञ्चीस लाख, पन्द्रह लाख, दस लाख, तीन लाख,

In the fifth earth, there is both hot and cold pain, that is, in the upper two hundred thousand hells, there is hot pain, and in the lower one hundred thousand hells, there is cold pain. In the sixth and seventh earths, there is cold pain.
