आदिपुराणम् कलाधरकलास्पर्दिदेहज्योत्स्नास्मितोज्ज्वलाः । दिनद्वयेन तेऽश्नन्ति वार्भमन्धोऽक्षमात्रकम् ॥१९॥ शेषो विधिस्तु निश्शेषो हरिवर्षसमो मतः । ततः क्रमेण कालेऽस्मिन् नवसर्पत्यनुक्रमात् ॥५०॥ प्रहीणा वृक्षवीर्यादिविशेषाः प्राक्तना यदा । जघन्यमोगभूमीनां मर्यादाविरभूत्तदा ॥५१॥ यथावसरसंप्राप्तस्तृतीयः कालपर्ययः । प्रावर्तत सुराजेव स्वां मर्यादामलक्ष्यन् ॥५२।। सागरोपमकोटीना कोव्यौ द्वे लब्धसंस्थितौ । कालेऽस्मिन् मारते वर्षे माः पल्योपमायुषः ॥५३॥ गम्यूतिप्रमितोच्छायाः प्रियङ्गुश्यामविग्रहाः । दिनान्तरेण संप्राप्तधात्रीफलमिताशनाः ॥५४॥ ततस्तृतीयकालेऽस्मिन् व्यतिक्रामत्यनुक्रमात् । पल्योपमाष्टमागस्तु यदास्मिन् परिशिष्यते ॥५५॥ कल्पानोकहवीर्याणां क्रमादेव परिच्युतौ । ज्योतिरङ्गास्तदा वृक्षा गता मन्दप्रकाशताम् ॥५६॥ "पुष्पवन्तावथाषाख्यां पौर्णमास्यां स्फुरत्प्रमौ । सापा प्रादुरास्ता तो गगनोमयभागयोः ॥५॥ चामीकरमयौ पोताविव तौ गगनार्णवे । वियद्गजस्य "निर्याण"लिखितौ तिलकाविव ॥५४॥ पौर्णमासीविलासिन्याः क्रीब्यमानौ समुज्ज्वलौ । परस्परकराश्लिष्टौ जातुषाविव गोलकौ ॥५९॥ जगद्गृहमहाद्वारि विन्यस्तो कालभूभृतः । "प्रत्यग्रस्य प्रवेशाय कुम्माविव हिरण्मयौ ॥६॥
थी, उनका शरीर चार हजार धनुष ऊँचा था तथा उनकी सभी चेष्टाएँ शुभ थीं ॥४८॥ उनके शरीरकी कान्ति चन्द्रमाकी कलाओंके साथ स्पर्धा करती थी अर्थात् उनसे भी कहीं अधिक सुन्दर थी, उनको मुसकान बड़ी ही उज्ज्वल थी। वे दो दिन बाद कल्पवृक्षसे प्राप्त हुए बहेड़के बराबर उत्तम अन्न खाते थे ॥४९॥ उस समय यहाँकी शेष सब व्यवस्था हरिक्षेत्र के समान थी फिर क्रमसे जब द्वितीय काल पूर्ण हो गया और कल्पवृक्ष तथा मनुष्योंके बल, विक्रम आदि घट गये तब जघन्य भोगभूमिकी व्यवस्था प्रकट हुई ॥५०-५१॥ उस समय न्यायवान् राजाके सदृश मर्यादाका उल्लंघन नहीं करता हुआ तीसरा सुषमादुःषमा नामका काल यथाक्रमसे प्रवृत्त हुआ ॥५२॥ उसकी स्थिति दो कोड़ाकोड़ी सागरकी थी। उस समय इस भारतवर्षमें मनुष्योंकी स्थिति एक पल्यकी थी। उनके शरीर एक कोश ऊँचे थे, वे प्रियङ्गुके समान श्यामवर्ण थे और एक दिनके अन्तरसे आँवलेके बराबर भोजन ग्रहण करते थे ॥५३-५४।। इस प्रकार क्रम-क्रमसे तीसरा काल व्यतीत होनेपर जब इसमें पल्यका आठवाँ भाग शेष रह गया तब कल्पवृक्षोंकी सामर्थ्य घट गयी और ज्योतिरङ्ग जातिके कल्पवृक्षोंका प्रकाश अत्यन्त मन्द हो गया ॥५५-५६।। तदनन्तर किसी समय आषाढ़ सुदी पूर्णिमाके दिन सायंकालके समय आकाशके दोनों भागोंमें अर्थात् पूर्व दिशामें उदित होता हुआ चमकीला चन्द्रमा और पश्चिममें अस्त होता हुआ सूर्य दिखलायी पड़ा ।।५७॥ उस समय वे सर्य और चन्द्रमा ऐसे शोभायमान हो रहे थे मानो आकाशरूपी समुद्रमें सोनेके बने हुए दो जहाज ही हों अथवा आकाशरूपी हस्तीके गण्डस्थलके समीप सिन्दूरसे बने हुए दो चन्द्रक (गोलाकार चिह) ही हों। अथवा पूर्णिमारूपी स्त्रीके दोनों हाथोंपर रखे हुए खेलनेके मनोहर लाखनिर्मित दो गोले ही हो । अथवा आगे होनेवाले दुःषम-सुषमा नामक कालरूपी नवीन राजाके प्रवेशके लिए जगत्रूपी घरके विशाल दरवाजेपर रखे हुए मानो दो सुवर्णकलश ही हों । अथवा तारारूपी फेन

Then, in due course, as the second *kalpa* (eon) came to an end, ||50|| the strength of the trees and other things gradually declined, and the boundaries of the *jighanya-bhoga-bhūmi* (a land of inferior pleasures) became apparent. ||51|| At that time, the third *kalpa* named *suṣamā-duṣṣamā* (a period of prosperity and adversity) began, like a righteous king, without transgressing its boundaries. ||52|| Its extent was like two *koṭi* (a unit of measurement) of oceans. In that *kalpa*, the lifespan of humans in this *Bharata-varṣa* (India) was equal to one *palyā* (a unit of time). Their bodies were one *krośa* (a unit of distance) tall, they were dark like *priyaṅgu* (a type of fruit), and they ate food equivalent to an *āmala* (a type of fruit) every other day. ||53-54|| As the third *kalpa* passed, when only one-eighth of a *palyā* remained, the strength of the *kalpa-vṛkṣa* (mythical trees of abundance) declined, and the *jyoti-raṅga* (a type of tree) became dim. ||55-56|| Then, on the full moon day of the month of *Āṣāḍha* (July-August), in the evening, the bright moon rose in the east and the setting sun appeared in the west. ||57|| At that time, the sun and moon shone brightly, as if they were two golden ships in the ocean of the sky, or two *tilaka* (marks) made of vermilion near the temple of the elephant of the sky, or two beautiful balls of lac placed in the hands of the woman representing the full moon, or two golden pots placed at the grand entrance of the house of the world, for the entry of the new king, the *kalpa* named *duṣṣamā-suṣamā*, or like foam in the form of stars.
