THE IMMORTAL STORY OF GULLIKAYI AJJI In March, 981 AD, Chavundaraya organised the first head-anointing ceremony (Mahamastakabhishek) of Bahubali Statue with much fanfare by Chavundaraya. He was overwhelmed with the false ego that he could supervise the installation of the grand statue for the first time in the fifth spoke of this time cycle. He felt that none could match him in the coming years. As the Mahamastakabhishek began, gallons and gallons of milk were poured by Chavundaraya the naval of the statue, causing commotion and anxiety. He was stunned. He then opened the abhishek to all elite class gathered over there. Everyone tried but still the pouring would not reach the feet of the statue. With the permission of his guru, he then opened the ceremony inviting anyone and everyone to perform the abhishek. There appeared an old woman (Ajji in Kannada) in dilapidated sari holding a few drops of milk in the dried cup of the common weed called gullikayi. She requested permission but the guards and the gathering could not hold their laugh and ridicule. Chavundaraya allowed her to perform the abhishek. Lo and Behold! No sooner the milk from the Gullikayi was poured on the statue, not only the statue but whole of Vindhiyagiri hills and the surrounding lakes were covered with flowing stream of milk. He soon realised that she was none other than Goddess Khushmandini, the Yakshi of Lord Neminatha, who had come to bless the event and tame his ego. He ordered the making a replica of six feet high statue in her honour. गुल्लिकायि वृद्धा की अमर कहानी जब प्रतिमा का निर्माण हो गया तो उसकी प्रतिष्ठा के लिए सन् 981 ई. में प्रथम महामस्तकाभिषेक का आयोजन किया गया। हजारों मन दूध से प्रतिमा का अभिषेक किया गया पर आश्चर्य कि इतना दूध बहाने पर भी वह प्रतिमा की नाभि से नीचे नहीं पहुंच पा रहा था। सभी चिन्तित थे। तभी प्रतिष्ठाचार्य ने अपने निमित्त-ज्ञान से जाना कि कोई उपेक्षित वृद्धा श्रीफल की छोटी-सी गुल्लिका (कटोरी) में दूध लिए प्रभु के अभिषेक के लिए भक्तिपूर्वक लगातार आ रही है पर उसे स्थान नहीं मिल पा रहा है और इसलिए यह दुग्धाभिषेक पूर्ण नहीं हो पा रहा है। ऐसी स्थिति में चामुण्डराय ने अपने गुरु से मार्गदर्शन की प्रार्थना की तथा उनका आदेश पाकर वे नंगे पाँव अज्जि (वृद्धा) के पास पहुंचे और आदरपूर्वक उसे प्रभु-प्रतिमा के पास लाकर उससे अभिषेक के लिए अनुरोध किया। जैसे ही अज्जि ने गुल्लिका भर दूध से प्रभु का भक्तिभाव से अभिषेक किया, वैसे ही वहाँ दूध की नदियाँ बह निकलीं और विन्ध्यगिरि और चन्द्रगिरि के मध्य स्थित सरोवर दूध से लबालब भर गया। तभी से उस वृद्धा का नाम गल्लिकाज्जि पड़ गया। कहते हैं कि गल्लिका के रूप में स्वयं कूष्माण्डिनी देवी (भगवान् नेमिनाथ की यक्षी) ही अभिषेक करने आई थीं। इस घटना से सेनापति चामुण्डराय के अंतरंग में उत्पन्न मूर्ति निर्माण का दर्प भी दूर हो गया। उन्होंने चागद और गुल्लिकाज्जि दोनों की भक्तिभावना को चिर स्थायित्व देने के लिए प्रतिमा के पास ही छह फुट ऊँचा चागद-स्तम्भ बनवाया और गुल्लिकाज्जि की प्रतिमा का भी निर्माण करवाया। [26]
