TYAGAD BRAHMADEVA PILLAR Chagad took a vow not to charge for his service and as soon as he took his oath, gold-dust and his hands were suddenly and miraculously separated. He returned the gold-dust to Chavundaraya. It was due to this selfless and divine feeling of service that he was named Tyagad (Tyagad' means sacrifice in Sanskrit). It was this divine spirit of sacrifice and devotion of 12 long years which resulted in the creation of wonder statue of Lord Bahubali. Chavundaraya erected this pillar in the mandapa in front of the statue, in honour of the selfless Chagad. It is of 7.5' in height. At one of the faces of the base, there are images of Chamundaraya and his guru Nemichandra flanked by attendants fan bearers. It has beautiful engravings and has a scroll on Chavundaraya with the following meaning: "A sun in the shape of a jewel adorning the crest of the eastern mountains, the brahmakshara race; a moon in the shape of the splendour of his fame causing to swell the ocean, the brahmakshara race; the central gem to the pearl necklace of Lakshmi, procured from the Rohana mountain, the त्यागद ब्रह्मदेव स्तम्भ चागद ने प्रतिज्ञा की कि इस मूर्ति का निर्माण में सेवाभाव से करूँगा और कोई पारिश्रमिक नहीं लूँगा। उसके इस संकल्प के साथ ही उसके हाथों से चिपका सोना छट गया। उसने सारी स्वर्ण-राशि चामुण्डराय को वापस कर दी। विशुद्ध भक्ति-भावना से प्रेरित होकर चागद ने प्रतिमा का निर्माण किया। हिंदी में उसके नाम का अर्थ ही त्याग है। उसकी 12 वर्ष की सतत तपस्या और साधना ने एक ऐसी अलौकिक प्रतिमा का निर्माण किया जो युगों-युगों तक पूज्य रहेगी। जो समय की शिला पर अद्भुत कलाकृतियों के रूप में अपनी विलक्षण प्रतिभा के अमिट चिन्ह छोड़ जाते हैं, उन महान कलाकारों की समर्पित साधना का कहना ही क्या? भगवान बाहुबली की दिव्य प्रतिमा मौन रहकर भी शताब्दियों से उन शिल्पियों की विस्मय-विमुग्धकारी कला का उद्घोष कर रही है। चामुण्डराय ने निःस्वार्थ शिल्पी चागद के सम्मान में बाहबली की प्रतिमा के ठीक सामने मंडप में एक स्तम्भ का निर्माण करवाया जिसकी ऊँचाई 7 फुट 5 इंच है। स्तम्भ के निम्न भाग के मुखपटल पर चामुण्डराय और उनके गुरु नेमिचन्द्र जी की आकृतियाँ अंकित हैं जो चंवरधारी सेवकों से घिरी हैं। स्तम्भ पर सुन्दर नक्काशी के साथ चामुण्डराय के विषय में एक लेख है जिसका अर्थ इस प्रकार है - "एक सूर्य जो प्रकाश-मणि बनकर उदयाचल पर्वत के शिखरों को देदिप्यमान कर रहा है, ब्रह्माक्षर वंश; एक शरत चन्द्र जो उनके कीर्ति-वैभव के प्रतीक रुप में सागर की लहरों को आन्दोलित करता है, ब्रह्माक्षर वंश, रोहन पर्वत से प्राप्त उत्तम नीलम मणि जो [24]
