CHAVUNDARAYA Chavundraya or Chamundaraya (940989 A. D.) was the commander-in-chief of Western Ganga dynasty of Talakad which falls in Karnataka. He worked under the reigns of Marasimha || (963-975) and Rachamalla IV (975-986). A multi-talented person and a courageous commander he was, he is now remembered more for his initiative of the construction of the grand and divine monolithic statue of Bhagwan Bahubali. His courageous exploits earned him several honorific titles such as Samara Parasurama, Vira Martanda, Ranarangasimha, Samara Dhurandhara, Vairikula Kaladanda, Bhuja Vikrama and Bhatamara. Known for his religious fervour and literary skills, his works called the Chamundaraya Purana or Trishasthi Salaka Purana in Kannada and the Charitrasara in Sanskrit are wellknown. He patronised the famous savants of his time, notably the poet Ranna and has etched his name in the history of medieval Kamataka. The Chavundaraya basadi in Chandragiri bears his glorious name. चातुण्डराय Chavundaraya चावुण्डराय चावुण्डराय या चामुण्डराय (940-989 ई.) तलकाड के पश्चिमी गंगा राजवंश के सेनापति थे जो कर्नाटक प्रदेश में आता है। उन्होंने राजा मारासिंह द्वितीय (963-975) और राजमल्ला (975-986) के शासन काल में सेनाध्यक्ष के रूप में कार्य किया। वह एक बहुमुखी प्रतिभा सम्पन्न व्यक्ति और एक साहसी सेनापति थे जो आज भगवान बाहुबली की विशाल और दिव्य प्रतिमा के निर्माण के लिए किए गए प्रयासों के लिए अधिक जाने जाते हैं। उनके साहसिक कार्यों के कारण उन्हें अनेक उपाधियों से सम्मानित किया गया जैसे समर परसुराम, वीर मार्तण्ड, रणरंगसिंह, समर धुरन्धर, वैरीकुल कालदंड, भुजा विक्रम और भटमार इत्यादि। वह धार्मिक क्रियाकलापो के प्रति अपने उत्साह और साहित्यिक प्रतिभा के लिए भी जाने जाते हैं। कन्नड में उनकी रचनाएं चावण्डराय-पुराण या त्रिषष्ठीषलाका पुराण और संस्कृत में चरित्रसार सुविख्यात है। उन्होंने अपने समय के प्रसिद्ध विद्वानों को भी संरक्षण प्रदान किया जैसे कवि रन्ना। इस प्रकार कर्नाटक के मध्यकालीन इतिहास में उन्होंने अपना विशिष्ट स्थान बनाया है। चन्द्रगिरि स्थित चावुण्डराय बसदी में उनका गौरवपूर्ण नाम अंकित है। 28 चंद्रगिरी में उनके कन्नड़ में हस्ताक्षर His signature in Kannada at Chandragiri Credits: Dineshkannambadi at Wikipedia.
