SHRAVANBELGOLA This place is famous for the grand and marveloous statue of Bhagwan Gommatesh Bahubali. Other epithets for this place as seen in some inscriptions are Devara Belgola and Gommatapura. It is a small township located in Hassan district of Karnataka. It is about 155 kms from Bengaluru and 222 km from Mangalore. It is 12 kms away from the National Highway no. 75 near Hirisave. Chandragiri and Vindyagiri are the two famous hills at this place. Besides, it has an old mutt ably managed by the Swastisri Charukeerti Bhattarak ji. There are many old temples near the foothills. The name Belgola was derived either from the common weed called belagulla or the wild brinjal (Botanical name: Solanum ferox) or the Sanskrit names viz. Svetasarovara & Dhavalasarovara meaning white or clean pond. The prefix Shravan referring to the SamaNas was given by Samrat Ashok. The pond is mentioned by these names in the inscriptions available there. As per the second volume of Epigraphia Carnatica, complied by B. Lewis Rice, the place is spotted with over 800 inscriptions more so in Chandragiri dating from 600 AD to 1830 AD. A perusal of the inscriptions written in proto-Kannada and old Kannada reveal the rise of this language as well as that of the various dyanasties such as Western Ganga Dynasty, the Rashtrakutas, the Hoysala, Vijayanagara and the Wodeyars Empire over a millennium. In a survey conducted by the Times of India on August 5, 2007, the statue was voted by the readers as the first of the Seven Wonders of India. श्रवणबेलगोला यह स्थान भगवान् गोम्मटेश बाहुबली की विशाल और विस्मयकारी प्रतिमा के लिए प्रसिद्ध है। इस स्थान के कुछ अन्य नाम बेलगोला और गोम्मटपरा हैं जिनका उल्लेख कुछ शिलालेखों में हुआ है। यह कर्नाटक राज्य के हासन जिले के अंतर्गत एक छोटा-सा नगर है जो बेंगलूरू से 155 कि.मी. और मंगलौर से 222 कि.मी. है। हिरिसेवे के निकट नेशनल हाइवे (राष्ट्रीय राजमार्ग) नं. 75 से यह 12 कि.मी. दूर है। यहां चन्द्रगिरि और विन्ध्यगिरि नामक दो प्रसिद्ध पहाड़ियाँ हैं। इसके अतिरिक्त यहां एक प्राचीन मठ है जिसका सुचारु संचालन स्वस्तिश्री चारुकीर्ति भट्टारक जी द्वारा किया जाता है। पहाड़ियों के आसपास के क्षेत्र में बहुत से प्राचीन मन्दिर हैं। बेलगोला नाम या तो यहां सामान्य रूप से पाई जाने वाली घास जिसे बेलगुल्ला कहा जाता है, से व्युत्पन्न हुआ है या उस जंगली बैंगन से जिसका वनस्पति-शास्त्र का नाम 'सोलानम फारेक्स' है। यह संस्कृत नामों श्वेत सरोवर और धवल सरोवर से भी जुड़ा हो सकता है जिनका अर्थ सफेद या स्वच्छ तालाब है। 'श्रवण' नाम सम्राट अशोक द्वारा जोड़ा गया था जो श्रमण की ओर संकेत करता है। इस सरोवर को यहां उपलब्ध शिलालेखों में इन्हीं नामों से अभिहित किया गया है। बी. लेविस राइस द्वारा सम्पादित एपिग्राफिया कर्नाटिका भाग-2 के अनुसार इस स्थान पर 800 से अधिक शिलालेख पाए गए हैं जिनमें अधिकांश चन्द्रगिरि पर हैं और जिनका लेखन काल 600 ई. से 1830 तक है। आद्य और पुरानी कन्नड में लिखित इन शिलालेखों के अध्ययन से इस भाषा के विकास के साथ-साथ विभिन्न राजवंशों के उत्थान और पतन की कहानियाँ भी सामने आती हैं जैसे - पश्चिमी गंगा राजवंश, राष्ट्रकूट, होयसोला, विजयनगर और वोडेयार साम्राज्य इत्यादि। टाईम्स आफ इण्डिया द्वारा 5 अगस्त 2007 में आयोजित एक सर्वेक्षण में बाहुबली की इस विशाल प्रतिमा को पाठकों द्वारा भारत के सात आश्चर्यो में प्रथम स्थान पर चुना गया था। 1200
