triumphant king, "but your brothers have not yet accepted your supremacy." Bharat sent messengers with mission to "Tell them to accept me as the Emperor." Bharat's 98 brothers were disgusted. "Greed for empire has gripped our eldest brother. He will not allow us to rule the kingdoms that our father gave us. It's better to abandon our regal rights and follow in father's footsteps," they said. All the 98 of them discarded their crowns, clothes and ornaments and performed kesha lochana (practice of initiation) before the devine presence of Bhagwan Rishabh. King Bahubali however rejected this path of meek surrender. He refused to accept subordination to his elder brother as the emperor. He took to task, the messenger who conveyed Bharat's order. "I am reigning over Paudanpura given to me by my father. Why has brother cast his eyes on it? I have no wish to hand over this land though he is my elder brother. Go and tell him that. Is he not content with his empire?" said Bahubali. संसार जीत लिया हो पर आपके भाइयों ने अभी तक आपकी आधीनता स्वीकार नहीं की है।" भरत ने शीघ्र ही सभी भाइयों के पास दूत भेजे कि वे उसे चक्रवर्ती सम्राट् स्वीकार करें। सभी भाई यह सोचकर उसके प्रति ग्लानि से भर गए कि हमारे सबसे बड़े भाई को राज्य–लिप्सा ने ग्रस लिया है। जो राज्य हमारे पिता हमको देकर गए हैं, वह हमें उन पर भी राज्य नहीं करने देगा। इससे तो यही अच्छा है कि हम अपना अधिकार छोड़कर पिताजी के चरण चिन्हों पर ही चल पड़ें। सभी 98 भाई केशलोचन (बालों को हाथों से तोडना) करते हए ऋषभदेव जी के समवसरण में सम्मिलित होते हुए तपस्या में संलग्न हो गए। पर बाहुबली ने इस मार्ग का अनुसरण नहीं किया। उन्होंने अपने बड़े भाई को चक्रवर्ती सम्राट् मानने से इंकार कर दिया। जो दूत भरत का संदेश लेकर उनके पास आया था, उन्होंने उससे कहा, "मैं जिस पोदनपुर पर राज्य कर रहा हूँ, यह मेरे पिता ने मुझे दिया है। मेरा भाई इसपर कुदृष्टि क्यों डाल रहा है? यद्यपि वह मेरे बड़े भाई हैं पर मेरी इस भूभाग को उन्हें देने की कोई इच्छा नहीं है। जाओ और उन्हें बता दो। क्या वह अपने राज्य से संतुष्ट नहीं है?" दूत ने कहा- 'श्रीमान्! मैं तो केवल संदेशवाहक हूँ। मैं राजा भरत को जानता हूँ। आप शान्तिपूर्वक अपने बड़े भाई की सर्वोच्चता स्वीकार कर लीजिए। भरत के पास चक्र भी है और राजदण्ड भी जो उनके लिए अपने विरोधियों को शान्त करने के लिए पर्याप्त हैं। उनकी आधीनता स्वीकार करके आप सम्मान भी प्राप्त करेंगे और वैभव भी।"बाहुबली क्रोध से तिलमिला उठे। 'निकल जाओ यहाँ से। यदि तुम दूत न होते तो न जाने मैं तुम्हारे साथ क्या करता? क्या तुम मुझे धमकी दे रहे हो? और प्रलोभन भी? चले जाओ।" उन्होंने अपने सेवकों को दूत को बाहर तक छोड़कर आने की आज्ञा दी। __ "Sir, I am only a messenger," replied the messenger, "| know the emperor. Accept the emperor's supremacy quietly. Bharat has the chakra (wheel) and the rod (sceptre). They are enough for him to subdue his opponents. When that is the case, you will gain both esteem and wealth if you submit to him and join his court." Bahubali seethed with rage. "Get Out. I don't know what I would do to you if you were not a messenger. Are you making threats and offering inducements? He ordered the messenger to be thrown out. But the messenger did not yield.
