अध्ययन/उद्देश/सूत्रांक सूत्र-१०-११
इस तरह सर्व जीव धर्म-अधर्म, सुख-दुःख आदि जानते हैं । गौतम ! उसमें कुछ प्राणी ऐसे होते हैं कि जो आत्महित करनेवाले धर्म का सेवन मोह और अज्ञान की कारण से नहीं करते । और फिर परलोक के लिए आत्म हित रूप ऐसा धर्म यदि कोई माया-दंभ से करेगा तो भी उसका फायदा महसूस नहीं करेगा। सूत्र - १२-१४
यह आत्मा मेरा ही है । मैं मेरे आत्मा को यथार्थ तरह से जानता हूँ । आत्मा की प्रतीति करना दुष्कर है। धर्म भी आत्मसाक्षी से होता है । जो जिसे हितकारी या प्रिय माने वो उसे सुन्दर पद पर स्थापन करते हैं । (क्योंकि) शेरनी अपने क्रूर बच्चे को भी ज्यादा प्रिय मानती है । जगत के सर्व जीव ''अपनी तरह ही दूसरे की आत्मा हैं', इस तरह सोचे बिना आत्मा को अनात्मा रूप से कल्पना करते हुए दुष्ट वचन, काया, मन से चेष्टा सहित व्यवहार करता है । जब वो आत्मा निर्दोष कहलाती है । जो कलुषता रहित है । पक्षपात को छोड़ दिया है। पापवाले और कलुषित दिल जिससे काफी दूर हुए हैं । और दोष समान जाल से मुक्त है। सूत्र-१५-१६
परम अर्थयुक्त, तत्त्व स्वरूप में सिद्ध हए, सद्भुत चीज को साबित कर देनेवाले ऐसे, वैसे पुरुषों ने किए अनुष्ठान द्वारा वो (निर्दोष) आत्मा खुद को आनन्दित करता है। वैसे आत्मा में उत्तमधर्म होता है उत्तम तप-संपत्ति शील चारित्र होते हैं इसलिए वो उत्तम गति पाते हैं। सूत्र - १७-१८
हे गौतम ! कुछ ऐसे भी प्राणी होते हैं कि जो इतनी उत्तम कक्षा तक पहुँचे हो, लेकिन फिर भी मन में शल्य रखकर धर्माचरण करते हैं, लेकिन आत्महित नहीं समझ सकते । शल्यसहित ऐसा जो कष्टदायक, उग्र, घोर, वीर कक्षा का तप देवताई हजार साल तक करे तो भी उसका वो तप निष्फल होता है ? सूत्र-१९
जिस शल्य की आलोचना नहीं होती । निंदा या गर्दा नहीं की जाती या शास्त्रोक्त प्रायश्चित्त नहीं किया जाता । वो तो शल्य भी पाप कहलाता है। सूत्र-२०
माया, दंभ, छल करने के उचित नहीं है । बड़े-गुप्त पाप करना, अजयणा अनाचार सेवन करना, मन में शल्य रखना, वो आठ कर्म का संग्रह करवाता है । सूत्र - २१-२६
___ असंयम, अधर्म, शील और व्रत रहितता, कषाय सहितता, योग की अशुद्धि यह सभी सुकृत पुण्य को नष्ट करनेवाले और पार न पा सके वैसी दुर्गति में भ्रमण करनेवाले हो और फिर शारीरिक मानसिक दुःख पूर्ण अंत रहित संसार में अति घोर व्याकुलता भुगतनी पड़े, कुछ को रूप की बदसूरती मिले, दारिद्र्य, दुर्भगता, हाहाकार करवानेवाली वेदना, पराभाव पानेवाला जीवित, निर्दयता, करुणाहीन, क्रूर, दयाहीन, निर्लज्जता, गूढहृदय, वक्रता, विपरीत चित्तता, राग, द्वेष, मोह, घनघोर मिथ्यात्व, सन्मार्ग का नाश, अपयश प्राप्ति, आज्ञाभंग, अबोधि, शल्य-रहितपन यह सब भवोभव होते हैं। इस प्रकार पाप शल्य के एक अर्थवाले कईं पर्याय बताए। सूत्र-२७-३०
___ एक बार शल्यवाला हृदय करनेवाले को दूसरे कईंभव में सर्व अंग ओर उपांग बार-बार शल्य वेदनावाले होते हैं । वो शल्य दो तरीके का बताया है । सूक्ष्म और बादर । उन दोनों के भी तीन तीन प्रकार हैं । घोर, उग्र और उग्रतर | घोर माया चार तरह की है । जो घोर उग्र मानयुक्त हो और माया, लोभ और क्रोधयुक्त भी हो । उसी तरह उग्र और उग्रतर के भी यह चार भेद समझना । सूक्ष्म और बादर भेद-प्रभेद सहित इन शल्य को मुनि उद्धार करके

Such men, who are established in the true meaning, the essence, and who prove the wonderful thing, through the rituals performed by them, that (innocent) soul delights itself. Such a soul has the highest Dharma, the highest Tapas-Sampatti, good character, and conduct, therefore, they attain the highest state. Sutra-17-18
O Gautama! There are also some beings who have reached such a high level, but still practice Dharma with a 'Shalya' (blemish) in their mind, and cannot understand the benefit of the soul. If such a person, with a 'Shalya', performs Tapas of the painful, fierce, severe, and heroic class, like a deity, for a thousand years, will that Tapas be fruitless? Sutra-19

_ Once, a person with a 'Shalya' heart, in many other births, suffers from 'Shalya' pain in all limbs and appendages repeatedly. That 'Shalya' is described in two ways. Subtle and Gross. Both of them have three types each. Severe, Fierce, and Fiercer. Severe Maya is of four types. It is severe, fierce, human-like, and also full of Maya, greed, and anger.
