अध्ययन-१-शल्यउद्धरण सूत्र-१
तीर्थ को नमस्कार हो, अरहंत भगवंत को नमस्कार हो ।
आयुष्मान् भगवंत के पास मैंने इस प्रकार सुना है कि, यहाँ जो किसी छद्मस्थ क्रिया में वर्तते ऐसे साधु या साध्वी हो वो-इस परमतत्त्व और सारभूत चीज को साधनेवाले अति महा अर्थ गर्भित, अतिशय श्रेष्ठ, ऐसे 'महानिसीह'' श्रुतस्कंध श्रुत के मुताबिक त्रिविध (मन, वचन, काया) त्रिविध (करण, करावण, अनुमोदन) सर्व भाव से और अंतर-अभावी शल्यरहित होकर आत्मा के हित के लिए
अति घोर, वीर, उग्र, कष्टकारी तप और संयम के अनुष्ठान करने के लिए सर्व प्रमाद के आलम्बन सर्वथा छोड़कर सारा वक्त रात को और दिन को प्रमाद रहित सतत खिन्नता के सिवा, अनन्य, महाश्रद्धा, संवेग और वैरागमार्ग पाए हुए, नियाणारहित, बल-वीर्य, पुरुषकार और पराक्रम को छिपाए बिना, ग्लानि पाए बिना, वोसिराए-त्याग किए देहवाले, सुनिश्चित एकाग्र चित्तवाले होकर बारबार तप संयम आदि अनुष्ठान में रमणता करनी चाहिए। सूत्र-२
लेकिन राग, द्वेष, मोह, विषय, कषाय, ज्ञान आलम्बन के नाम पर होनेवाले कईं प्रमाद, ऋद्धि, रस, शाता इन तीनों तरह के गारव, रौद्रध्यान, आर्त्तध्यान, विकथा, मिथ्यात्व, अविरति (मन, वचन, काया के) दुष्टयोग, अनायतन सेवन, कुशील आदि का संसर्ग, चुगली करना, झूठा आरोप लगाना, कलह करना, जाति आदि आठ तरह से मद करना, इर्ष्या, अभिमान, क्रोध, ममत्वभाव, अहंकार अनेक भेद में विभक्त तामसभाव युक्त हृदय से
हिंसा, चोरी, झूठ, मैथुन, परिग्रह का आरम्भ, संकल्प आदि अशुभ परिणामवाले घोर, प्रचंड, महारौद्र, गाढ़, चिकने पापकर्म-मल समान लेप से खंडित आश्रव द्वार को बन्द किए बगैर न होना।
यह बताए हुए आश्रव में साधु-साध्वी को प्रवृत्त नही होना चाहिए । सूत्र -३
(इस प्रकार जब साधु या साध्वी उनके दोष जाने तब) एक पल, लव, मुहूर्त, आँख की पलक, अर्ध पलक, अर्ध पलक के भीतर के हिस्से जितना काल भी शल्य से रहित है-वो इस प्रकार हैसूत्र-४-६
जब मैं सर्व भाव से उपशांत बनूंगा और फिर सर्व विषय में विरक्त बनूँगा, राग, द्वेष और मोह का त्याग करूँगा, तब संवेग पानेवाला आत्मा परलोक के पंथ को एकाग्र मन से सम्यक् तरह से सोचे, अरे ! मैं यहाँ मृत्यु पाकर कहाँ जाऊंगा ? मैंने कौन-सा धर्म प्राप्त किया है ? मेरे कौन-से व्रत-नियम हैं ? मैंने कौन-से तप का सेवन किया है ? मैंने कैसा शील धारण किया है ? मैंने क्या दान दिया है ? सूत्र-७-९
कि जिसके प्रभाव से मैं हीन, मध्यम या उत्तम कुल में स्वर्ग या मानव लोक में सुख और समृद्धि पा सकूँ ? या विषाद करने से क्या फायदा? आत्मा को मैं अच्छी तरह से जानता हूँ, मेरा दुश्चरित्र और मेरे दोष एवं गुण है वो सब मैं जानता हूँ । इस तरह घोर अंधकार से भरपूर ऐसे पाताल-नर्क में ही मैं जाऊंगा कि जहाँ लम्बे अरसे तक हजारों दुःख मुझे सहने पड़ेंगे।

Salutations to the Tirthankaras, salutations to the Arhant Bhagavants.
I have heard from the Ayushman Bhagavant that, here, any Sadhu or Sadhvi who engages in a deceptive action, should, according to the 'Mahanishith' Shruta Skandha Shruta, which is extremely profound, extremely excellent, and the ultimate truth and essence, be free from all three types of (mind, speech, body) and three types of (doing, causing to do, approving) in all ways, and free from internal and external impurities, for the benefit of the soul,
should engage in extremely severe, heroic, intense, and arduous austerities and practices, completely abandoning all attachments to distractions, spending all their time, both night and day, free from distractions, constantly in a state of sorrow, with unwavering, great faith, devotion, and detachment, without hiding their strength, power, effort, and courage, without feeling shame, with a body that has renounced possessions, with a focused mind, repeatedly immersing themselves in austerities, practices, etc. Sutra-2

But, many distractions in the name of attachment, aversion, delusion, objects, passions, knowledge attachments, prosperity, taste, pride of the three types, anger-filled meditation, sorrowful meditation, falsehood, wrong belief, non-restraint (of mind, speech, body), evil association, indulgence in non-righteous things, laziness, etc., gossiping, falsely accusing, quarreling, being intoxicated by the eight types of pride (caste, etc.), envy, arrogance, anger, possessiveness, ego, many types of darkness-filled heart,
should not be present without closing the broken doors of the flow of impurities, which are like a thick, intense, extremely fierce, heavy, smooth, sinful karma-dirt, which leads to violence, theft, lying, sexual misconduct, attachment, intention, etc., which are the beginning of inauspicious results.
Having said this, Sadhus and Sadhvis should not be involved in the flow of impurities. Sutra-3

(When Sadhus or Sadhvis know their faults, then) even for a moment, a second, a Muhurta, a blink of an eye, half a blink, or even a fraction of a half blink, the time that is free from impurities is like this. Sutra-4-6

When I become completely calm and then become detached from all objects, abandoning attachment, aversion, and delusion, then the soul, which experiences devotion, should think with a focused mind, in the right way, about the path to the afterlife, "Oh! Where will I go after death? What Dharma have I attained? What vows and rules do I have? What austerities have I practiced? What conduct have I adopted? What have I donated?" Sutra-7-9

What will enable me to attain happiness and prosperity in heaven or the human realm, in a low, middle, or high family? Or what is the benefit of being sorrowful? I know the soul well, I know my bad character, my faults, and my virtues. In this way, I will go to the hellish underworld, which is filled with intense darkness, where I will have to endure thousands of sufferings for a long time.
