अध्ययन/उद्देश/सूत्रांक प्रायश्चित्त क्यों दे? सूत्र-४५६-४५७
हे गौतम ! शरीर में से शल्य बाहर नीकाला लेकिन झख्म भरने के लिए जब तक मल्हम लगाया न जाए, पट्टी न बाँधी जाए तब तक वो झख्म नहीं भरता । वैसे भावशल्य का उद्धार करने के बाद यह प्रायश्चित्त मल्हम पट्टी और पट्टी बाँधने समान समझो । दुःख से करके रूझ लाई जाए वैसे पाप रूप झख्म की जल्द रूझ लाने के लिए प्रायश्चित्त अमोघ उपाय है। सूत्र-४५८-४६०
हे भगवंत ! सर्वज्ञ ने बताए प्रायश्चित्त थोड़े से भी आचरण में, सूनने में या जानने में क्या सर्व पाप की शुद्धि होती है ? हे गौतम ! गर्मी के दिनों में अति प्यास लगी हो, पास ही में अति स्वादिष्ट शीतल जल हो, लेकिन जब तक उसका पान न किया जाए तब तक तृषा की शान्ति नहीं होती उसी तरह प्रायश्चित्त जानकर जब तक निष्कपट भाव से सेवन न किया जाए तब तक उस पाप की वृद्धि होती है लेकिन कम नहीं होता। सूत्र -४६१
हे भगवंत ! क्या प्रमाद से पाप की वृद्धि होती है ? क्या किसी वक्त आत्मा सावध हो जाए और पाप करने से रुक जाए तो वो पाप उतना ही रहे या वृद्धि होते रूक न जाए ? सूत्र-४६२
हे गौतम ! जैसे प्रमाद से साँप का डंख लगा हो लेकिन जरुरतवाले को पीछे से विष की वृद्धि हो वैसे पाप की भी वृद्धि होती है। सूत्र-४६३-४६५
हे भगवंत ! जो परमार्थ को जाननेवाले होते हैं, तमाम प्रायश्चित्त का ज्ञाता हो उन्हें भी क्या अपने अकार्य जिस मुताबिक हुए हो उस मुताबिक कहना पड़े? हे गौतम ! जो मानव तंत्र मंत्र से करोड़ को शल्य बिना और इंख रहित करके मूर्छित को खड़ा कर देते हैं, ऐसा जाननेवाले भी इंखवाले हुए हो, निश्चेष्ट बने हो, युद्ध में बरछी के घा से घायल हुए हो उन्हें दूसरे शल्य रहित मूर्छा रहित बनाते हैं । उसी तरह शील से उज्ज्वल साधु भी निपुण होने के बावजूद भी यथार्थ तरह से दूसरे साधु से अपना पाप प्रकाशित करे । जिस तरह अपना शिष्य अपने पास पाप प्रकट करे तब वो विशुद्ध होते हैं । वैसे खुद को शुद्ध होने के लिए दूसरों के पास अपनी आलोचना प्रायश्चित्त विधिवत करना चाहिए।

Similarly, to purify oneself, one should confess one's faults to others and perform Prāyaścitta according to the rules.
