उद्देशक-१ सूत्र - २२६-२२७
___ हे गौतम ! सर्व भाव सहित निर्मूल शल्योद्धार कर के सम्यग् तरह से यह प्रत्यक्ष सोचो कि इस जगत में जो संज्ञी हो, असंज्ञी हो, भव्य हो या अभव्य हो लेकिन सुख के अर्थी किसी भी आत्मा तिरछी, उर्ध्व अधो, यहाँ वहाँ ऐसे दश दिशा में अटन करते हैं। सूत्र-२२८-२२९
असंज्ञी जीव दो तरह के जानना, विकलेन्द्री यानि एक, दो, तीन, चार इतनी इन्द्रियवाले और एकेन्द्रिय, कृमि, कुंथु, माली उस क्रम से दो, तीन, चार इन्द्रियवाले विकलेन्द्रिय जीव और पृथ्वी, जल, अग्नि, वायु, वनस्पति वो स्थावर एकेन्द्रिय असंज्ञी जीव हैं । पशु, पंछी, नारकी, मानव, देव वो सभी संज्ञी हैं। और वो मर्यादा में-सर्वजीव में भव्यता और अभव्यता होती है । नारकी में विकलेन्द्रि और एकेन्द्रियपन नहीं होता। सूत्र- २३०-२३१
हमें भी सुख मिले (ऐसी ईच्छा से) विकलेन्द्रिय जीव को गर्मी लगने से छाँव में जाता है और ठंड़ लगे तो गर्मी में जाता है । तो वहाँ भी उन्हें दुःख होता है । अति कोमल अंगवाले उनका तलवा पलभर गर्मी या दाह को पलभर ठंडक आदि प्रतिकूलता सहन करने के लिए समर्थ नहीं हो सकते। सूत्र- २३२-२३३ __मैथुन विषयक संकल्प और उसके राग से-मोह से अज्ञान दोष से पृथ्वीकाय आदि एकेन्द्रिय में उत्पन्न होनेवाले को दुःख का अहसास नहीं होता । उन एकेन्द्रिय जीव का अनन्ताकाल परिवर्तन हो और वो बेइन्द्रियपन पाए, कुछ बेइन्द्रियपन नहीं पाते । कुछ अनादि काल के बाद पाते हैं। सूत्र - २३४
शर्दी, गर्मी, वायरा, बारिस आदि से पराभव पानेवाले मृग, जानवर, पंछी, सर्प आदि सपने में भी आँख की पलक के अर्ध हिस्से की भीतर के वक्त जितना भी सख नहीं पा सकते । सूत्र - २३५
____कठिन अनचाहा स्पर्शवाली तीक्ष्ण करवत और उसके जैसे दूसरे कठिन हथियार से चीरनेवाले, फटनेवाले, कटनेवाले, पल-पल कईं वेदना का अहसास करनेवाले नारकी में रहे बेचारे नारक को सुख कैसे मिले? सूत्र - २३६-२३७
देवलोकमें देवत्व सब का समान है तो भी वहाँ एक देव वाहन बने और दूसरा (ज्यादा शक्तिवाले) देव उस पर आरोहण करे ऐसा वहाँ दुःख होता है । हाथ, पाँव, तुल्य और समान होने के बावजूद भी वो दुःखी हैं । उस वक्त माया-दंभ कर के मैं भव हार गया, धिक्कार हो मुझे, इतना तप किया तो भी आत्मा ठगकर । हल्का देवपन पाया। सूत्र-२३८-२४१
