આ બધાં અવતરણામાંથી એકજ ધ્વનિ ઊઠે છે: પ્રતિકાવ્યકારે જે કાવ્યનું પ્રતિકાવ્ય કર્યું હાય એ કાવ્ય માટે એને પૂરા આદરભાવ હાય; મૂળ કાવ્યને એણે આસ્થાપૂર્વક અભ્યાસ કર્યાં હાય અને નહિ કે કાર્દષ્ટિએ એમાંથી દેજે! એકઠા કરવાના ઈરાદાથી. મૂળ કૃતિ જેટલી વધુ યશસ્વી અને ઉચ્ચ દરજ્જાની એટલી એની 'પેડી' કરવી મુશ્કેલ. અને આ મુશ્કેલીએ વટાવી જનારને મળતા યા પણ પા। એટલે જ વધારે! છિદ્રાન્વેષણુ એ કઇ ‘પેરડી'ના હેતુ નથી; દૂધમાંથી પે!રા કાઢવા ખેસનાર સાચા પ્રતિકાવ્યકાર નથી!

Ward કહે છે: For some years before the appe• arance of "A Christmas Garland" parody had been looked upon as a debased type of writing. That misconception was due to the lack of any parodist of genius, for parody may be (as at its best it cannot fail to be) a valuable form of creative criticism. In the modern usage the word 'parody' no longer implies exact imitation, but a form of humorous yet controlled exaggeration (unless the xaggeration is controlled, judiciously and sensitively, the result is burlesque, not parody.) In that quality of controlled exaggeration lies the value of parody as criticism... The parodist has a twofold function (a) he must produce writings, even for a reader who knows nothing of the original that is being parodied-that is to say he must be in part a creator. (b) he must be an unusually illuminating critic for those who go to him for that service. Every book of parodies should be able to justify the unwritten subtitle, "Criticism without Tears."
અહીં આ કંષ્ટક લાંબુ અવતર ટાંકાતા અર્થ રખેને કાઈ ‘પાંડિત્ય પ્રદર્શન' એવા કરી મેસે. અંગ્રેજી સાહિત્યમાં પ્રતિકાવ્યને જે ઉચ્ચ દરજ્જો અપાય છે તે અમસ્થ નહિ એટલું બતાવવા પૂરતા જ આ અવતરણાના આશય છે. પ્રતિકાવ્યની આ કસોટીએ કસી જોતાં આપણાં પ્રતિકાવ્યા ને કહેવાતાં પ્રતિકાવ્યેયમાંથી કેટલાં પાર ઊતરે એ તે! દરેક વાચકે પેાતે જ વિચારવું રહ્યું !
પ્રતિકાવ્ય એ કેવળ અનુકરણ નથી, પણ પરિડાસમય અનુકરણ' છે. એટલે એમાં હાસ્ય તા જોઈ એજ. આ ઉપરાંત તેમાં એક વિશેષ ચાતુરી ને કૌશલ એ રહેલાં છે ?
