________________ (**): t. 46 THE HINDOO PATRIOT. Culcutta, Dated. 24-9-1906. A very timely appeal has been issued by the Bombay Jain Swetam. "ber Conference to Hindoo ruling Chiefs on the subject of animal sacrifices. The appeal is to forbid the killing of any animals during the pujahs, We trust tlie appeal in the name of religion and humanity will have its due effect. In Bengal at least, the practice of sacrificing animals on religious occasions is slowly dying out. Still in important temples a fearful number of animals is sacrificed all through the year. The priestly classes ought to condemn the barbarous and inhuman practice which has crept into Hindoo religious ceremonies along with many other evils scarcely less gross and offensive to the senses as well as to religious feeling. The very idea of winning the favour of the Most High by Killing before Him and in His Name His own creatures, is so preposterous that it is a wonder that the practice has not altogether ceased in these days of advanced education and diffused shastraic knowledge. There ought to be an agitation set on foot by the educated public to bring the intensely conservative pandit and priestly classes to their senses and effect the abolition of the cruel, loathsome and sinful practice. d. 20 PUNJAB TIMES. Rawalpindi, Dated-21-9–1906. A REFINED DUSSERAH. Dusserah and Holi are equally important Hindoo holidays when the festivities are always in their full swing. People had come to degrade the very morality of these events, and the curse had extended to such a degree that a reform was more than necessary. On the occasion of a Dasserah or a Holi, you would see the majorities of the public maddened with enthusiasm and carrying on their enjoyments to the extent af shameful immoderation in all conceiveable directionsMoney on such occasions is spent lavishly and the major portion of it goes towards the so called enjoyments in the form of dances and drink. The after effects of all this are in serveral cases the abominable contagion contracted at an opportune moment but which results into a sad predicament. In fact the things had gone so bad and the pinch of immoralily had grown so high that many a respectable family had to undergo untoward circumtances as a sequel to the demoralised way of pleasure making.
