occasions is slowly dying out. Still in important temples a fearful number of animals is sacrified all thraugh the year. The priestly classes ought to condemn the barbarous and inhuman practice, which has crept into Hindu religious ceremonies along with many other evils scarcely less gross and offensive to the senses as well as to religious feelings. The very idea of winning the favour of the Most High by killing before Him and in His name His own creatures, is so preposterous that it is a wonder that the poactice has not altogether ceased in these days of advanced education and diffused shastraie knowledge. There ought to be an agitation set on foot by the educated public to bring the intensely conservative pandit and priestly classes to their senses and effect the abolition of the cruel, loathsome and sinful practice.

Date. 27.9. 906. Animal sacrifices in India. The jain conference has addressed an appeal to Hindoo chiefs to abstain from the offering af animal sacrifice. The appeal says:
As heard by us, offerings in the shape of male buffaloes and goats are offered to please and satisfy the goddess on the sacred and religious Dashera holidays in your Highness' 'territory may not suffer from plague, cholera, smallpox and other kindred terrible curses on man. But we beg to submit that notwithstanding the annual recurring offeriags to the
e terrible visitants are only the punishmeort of the wicked actions of humanity. Can it be called just and fair to offer dumb, inno-cent, pitiable animals to escape these? Can the Almighty be pleased in this way? The British dominious also are visited by the same terrific curses which disappear in due course of nature, but no such sacrifices are ever offered for the pacification of these curses in British terrirories. Only sanitary measures are adopted for the pacification of these visitants. Ánimal offerings are not scientific or according to scriptures, which decision has very often been arrived at and testified to by able and lerned pandits and some humam rulers following true scriptures have secured the blessings of these dumb creatures by totally prohibiting such sacrifices if their territories. We request your highness who is kind hearted,.. intellectual and a yoyer of justice, to forbid the killing of any animals on the Dashera holidays and thereby protect the "Dharma".
