आत्मानुशासन
स्नेहानुबद्धहृदयो ज्ञानचारित्रान्वितोऽपि न श्लाघ्यः । दीप इवापादयिता कज्जलमलिनस्य कार्यस्य ॥२३१॥
अर्थ - जिसका हृदय स्नेह (राग) से सम्बद्ध है वह ज्ञान और चारित्र से युक्त होकर भी, चूँकि स्नेह (तेल) से सम्बद्ध दीपक के समान काजल (मलिन कर्मों) को उत्पन्न करता है, वह प्रशंसा के योग्य नहीं है।
Just as the earthen-lamp (dīpaka), due to its association with oil, produces black-soot (kājala), the man whose heart (the mind) is associated with attachment (rāga), though possessed of knowledge (jñāna) and conduct (cāritra), produces karmas. He is not worthy of praise.
रतेररतिमायातः पुनारतिमुपागतः । तृतीयं पदमप्राप्य बालिशो बत सीदसि ॥२३२॥
अर्थ - हे भव्य! तू राग से हट कर द्वेष को प्राप्त होता है और तत्पश्चात् उससे भी रहित होकर फिर से उसी राग को प्राप्त होता है। इस प्रकार खेद है कि तू तीसरे पद को - राग-द्वेष के अभावरूप समताभाव को - न प्राप्त करके यों ही दुःखी होता है।
O worthy soul! You have first renounced attachment (rāga) and adopted aversion (dvesa). Then, you have renounced aversion and adopted, yet again, attachment. Alas! This way, by not adopting the third stage - of equanimity, rid of attachment and aversion - you are getting distressed.
