શાસ્રયાગ (21) તાપથી જેમ સોનાની ચોકસાઈ કરવામાં આવે છે, તેમ શાશ્વતસ્વરૂપ સુવણની ચેકકસ પરીક્ષા વિચક્ષણ પુરુષો કરે છે. અને આ શાસ્ત્રી તે તીવ્ર બેધવાળે પ્રબળ ક્ષોપશમીપ્રતિભાસંપન્ન પુરુષ હોઈ, આવી પરીક્ષા કરવાને અત્યંત યંગ્ય હોય છે. તે આ પ્રકારેકષછેદ-તાપ પરીક્ષા - સેનાને જેમ પ્રથમ તે ઉપર ઉપરથી કસોટી પત્થર પર કસી જુએ છે, તેમ કઈ એક શાસ્ત્રના વિધિનિષેધ એક અધિકારવાળા (એક મેક્ષિતત્ત્વને ગેચર) છે કે નહિં, તેની તે પરીક્ષા કરે છે, આ કષ પરીક્ષા છે. કદાચ સોનું ઉપર ઉપરથી તે બરાબર હોય, પણ અંદરમાં દગો કે ભેળસેળ હોય, ઉપરમાં સેનાનો ઢેળ હોય ને અંદર પીત્તળ હોય, તે શું ખબર પડે? એટલા માટે એને છેદ (cross-section) કરવામાં આવે છે, કાપ મૂકવામાં આવે છે, અને એમ કરતાં પોલ હોય તે પકડાઈ જાય છે. તેમ આ પરીક્ષાપ્રધાની પુરુષ એકસાઈ કરે છે કે એમાં જે વિધિનિષેધ બતાવ્યા છે, તેને યેન-ક્ષેમ કરે એવી ક્રિયા એની અંદર કહી છે કે કેમ? આ છેદપરીક્ષા છે. કદાચ સેનું ઉપરની બને કસોટીમાંથી પાર ઉતરે, પણ તેની પરીક્ષા હજુ પૂર્ણ થતી નથી, કારણ કે ભેળસેળ કરનારા એટલા બધા ચાલાક હોય છે કે સેનાની સાથે અણુએ અણુએ બીજી ધાતુ (Alloy) ભેળવી દે છે. આની પરીક્ષા તે સેનાને તપાવવાથી થાય; અગ્નિતાપથી સેનું ગાળવામાં આવે, તે તેની મેલાશની અશુદ્ધિની ખબર પડે. તેમ પરીક્ષક ચેકસી પણ સર્વ નયનું અવલંબન કરતા વિચારરૂપ પ્રબલ અગ્નિવડે કરીને, શાસ્ત્રની તાવણી કરે છે, શાસ્ત્રને તાવી જુએ છે અને તેમાં તાત્પર્યાની અશુદ્ધિ કે મેલાશ છે કે નહિ તે તપાસે છે. આ તાપપરીક્ષા છે. આમ કષછેદ-તાપવડે શાસ્ત્રરૂપ સોનાની પરીક્ષા આ વિચક્ષણ પુરુષ કરે છે; અને તે પણ કઈ પણ મત-દશનના આગ્રહ વિના, અત્યંત મધ્યસ્થતાથી, કેવળ તત્ત્વગષકપણે જ કરે છે. પ્રામાણિક ન્યાયાધીશની જેમ ન્યાયતુલા બરાબર જાળવીને, તે કોઈ પણ પ્રકારના પક્ષપાત વિના, સ્વચ્છ અંતઃકરણથી તે પરીક્ષા કરે છે. આવી પરીક્ષા કરતાં તેને તત્વનિર્ણય-તત્ત્વ * “ક્ષતિ વછેરતા: સા વથા જ્ઞનાઃ | શws વળવાશુદ્ધિ પલંત તથા વુધાઃ " ઇત્યાદિ.
