ગદષ્ટિસમુચય રહેલા આત્માને તે મનુષ્ય માને છે, તિર્યંચ દેહમાં રહેલા આત્માને તિર્યંચ માને છે, દેવ દેહમાં રહેલા આત્માને દેવ માને છે, અને નારક દેહમાં રહેલા આત્માને તે નારક માને છે, પણ તત્વથી હું પોતે તેવો નથી, તે તે દેહપર્યાયરૂપ નથી, હું તે અનંતાનંત જ્ઞાનશક્તિને સ્વામી સંવેદ્ય એ અચલ સ્થિતિવાળે શાશ્વત આત્મા છું, એમ તે મૂઢ જાણતા નથી. આમ પોતાના દેહમાં આત્માને અધ્યાસ કરતા એ આ બહિરાત્મા પરના આત્માને જ્યાં વાસ છે એવા સ્વદેહ સદેશ અચેતન પરદેહને આ પારકે દેહ માની બેસે છે. અને આમ દેહમાં સ્વપરના મિથ્યા અધ્યવસાયનેમાન્યતાને લીધે, જેને આત્માનું ભાન નથી એવા અનાત્મણ જનને સ્ત્રી-પુત્રાદિ સંબંધી વિભ્રમ વર્તે છે, અને તેમાંથી અવિદ્યા નામને દઢ સંસ્કાર જન્મે છે, કે જેથી લેક પુન: દેહ એ જ આત્મા એવું અભિમાન ધરે છે. આ દેહમાં આત્મબુદ્ધિ એ જ સંસાર દુઃખનું મૂળ છે.”
જડ ચલ જડ ચલ કર્મ જે દેહને હેજી, જાણ્યું આતમ તત્વ; બહિરાતમ બહિરાતમતા મેં ગ્રહી હોજી, ચતુરગે એકત્વ. નમિપ્રભ૦”–શ્રી દેવચંદ્રજી.
દેહમાં આ આત્મબુદ્ધિને લીધે જ જીવ તેના લાલન-પાલનાથે વિષયમાં પ્રવૃત્તિ કરે છે, અને તે વિષયપ્રાપ્તિના સાધનરૂપ ધનાદિના ઉપાર્જનમાં પ્રવૃત્ત થાય છે, તેની પ્રાપ્તિમાં અનુકૂળ થાય તે પ્રત્યે રાગ કરે છે, પ્રતિકૂળ પ્રત્યે દ્વેષ ધરે છે. તેમાં કોઈ વચ્ચે આડું આવે તેના પ્રત્યે ક્રોધ કરે છે. તુચ્છ કદન જેવા કંઈક વિષયની પ્રાપ્તિ થતાં તે અનંતગણું અભિમાન ધરી કાકીડાની જેમ નાચે છે. અને વિશેષ વિશેષનો લોભ ધરતે રહી તેના લાભ માટે અનેક પ્રકારના છળપ્રપંચ-માયાકપટ કરી પોતાને અને પરને છેતરે છે. ઈત્યાદિ પ્રકારે જીવ વિષયને અર્થે કષાય કરે છે, અને તેથી હાથે કરીને આ ભવપ્રપંચ ઉભું કરીને, સંસાર પરિભ્રમણદુ:ખ પામી, તે ભદ્વિગ્ન બને છે. આમ દેહમાં આત્મબુદ્ધિરૂપ મૂળથી ઉપજતા વિષય-કષાયથી આ જીવનું સંસારચક્ર ચાલ્યા કરે છે.

नरदेहस्थमात्मानमविद्वान्मन्यते नरम् । तिर्यञ्चं तिर्यगङ्गस्थं सुराङ्गस्थं सुरं तथा ॥ नारकं नारकाङ्गस्थं न स्वयं तत्त्वतस्तथा। अनंतानंतधीशक्तिः स्वसंबेद्योऽचलस्थितिः।। स्वदेहसदृशं दृष्ट्वा परदेहमचेतनम् । परात्माधिष्ठितं मूढः परत्वेनाध्यवस्यति ॥ स्वपराध्यवसायेन देहेष्वविदितात्मनाम् । वर्त्तते विभ्रमः पुसां पुत्रभार्यादिगोचरः ।। अविद्यासंज्ञितस्तस्मात्संस्कारो जायते दृढः । येन लोकोऽङ्गमेव स्वं पुनरप्यभिमन्यते ।। मूलं संसारदुःखस्य देह एव आत्मधीस्ततः । त्यस्वैनां प्रविशेदन्तर्बहिरव्यापृतेन्द्रियः॥"

In this way, the soul becomes entangled in the cycle of desires and passions, creating a web of karma and suffering, and becoming trapped in the cycle of birth and death. This cycle of suffering is driven by the mistaken identification of the soul with the body, which leads to desires and passions.
