તારાદષ્ટિઃ બીજુ ગાંગ-નિયમ, શૌચની વ્યાખ્યા
(૧૭૯) અંત શુદ્ધિ કરવી, આત્મમલિનતા દૂર કરવી, તે જ ખરૂં શૌચ છે. કેટલાક લોકે જલથી જ
શૌચ માને છે, તે યુક્ત નથી. તેથી તે કદાચ શરીરને મેલ સાફ શૌચ=અંતઃશુદ્ધિ થાય, અને તે પણ ખરેખરી રીતે બનવા યોગ્ય નથી, કારણ કે શરીર
પોતે જ અશુચિની ખાણ છે, અશુચિને ઉકરડો છે. તે હજારો વર્ષ સુધી સાગર જેટલાં જલથી પણ સ્નાન કરતાં શુદ્ધ ન થાય ! એમ માછલાં પણ બિચારા વીસે કલાક પાણીમાં પડ્યા રહે છે ! તેમ ગમે તેટલા તીર્થ સ્નાન કર્યું પણ શૌચ થતું નથી. આ બાહ્ય શૌચ અહીં પ્રસ્તુત નથી, પણ અંતરંગ શૌચ જ વિવક્ષિત છે. ભાવશુદ્ધિરૂપ આધ્યાત્મિક શૌચને છેડી, જે જલ આદિ શૌચ છે, તે ભલે મૂઢ જનને વિસ્મય પમાડે, પણ બુધ જનને નહિં. કારણ કે–
અહો ! મૂઢ જીવો એક વાર નાહ્યા, બીજી વાર નાહ્યા, ત્રીજી વાર નાહ્યા, એમ ફરી ફરી શુદ્ધ જળવડે નહાય છે અને મલના સ્થાનરૂપ આ શરીરને ચંદન-સુખડથી ચર્ચ છે; અને હવે અમે પવિત્ર છીએ એમ ગણી એના પર પ્રીતિ–મોહ ધરે છે; પણ વાસ્તવિક રીતે એમ નથી. એ શરીર કદી શુદ્ધ નથી થતું. ઉકરડો કદી શુદ્ધ થાય ખરો? ન જ થાય.”
શ્રી મનસુખભાઈ કી. કૃત શાંતસુધારસ વિવેચન બુધ અને તે આવા બાહ્ય શૌચને તેની કવચિત ગ્યતા કરતાં ઝાઝું મહત્વ આપતા નથી. તેઓની દષ્ટિ તે મુખ્યપણે અંતરંગ શુદ્ધિ ભણી જ હોય છે. તેઓ તે ધ્યાનરૂપ જલવડે, કમલની શુદ્ધિ કરવારૂપ ભાવ સ્નાન કરે છે. ધમરૂપ* દ્રહની અંદર બ્રહ્મચર્યરૂપ નિર્મલ શાંતિતીર્થમાં તેઓ સ્નાન કરી વિમલ વિશુદ્ધ થાય છે, દોષને ત્યાગ કરી શીતલ થાય છે.”
“ध्यानांभसा तु जीवस्य सदा यच्छुद्धिकारणम् ।
કરું í સાબિચ માઘસ્નાનં તદુ ”—શ્રી હરિભદ્રસૂરિકૃત અષ્ટક “ધમ જગનાથને ધર્મ શુચિ ગાઈએ, આપણે આતમા તેહ ભાવીએ. ” “ પર પરિણતિ રજ કે, નિર્મલ સિદ્ધિ વરંત.”—શ્રી દેવચંદ્રજી x" शौचमाध्यात्मिकं त्यक्त्वा भावशुद्धयात्मकं शुभम् ।।"
નરાશિરે ચહું મૂઢવિદEાપન દિ તત્વ –વાચકવર્યશ્રી ઉમાસ્વાતિજી. *" स्नायं स्नायं पुनरपि पुनः स्नांति पुण्याभिरभ्दिः वारंवारं बत मलतनु चंदनैश्चर्चयंते । मूढात्मानो वयमपमला प्रोतिमित्याश्रयंते । नेो शुद्धयंते कथमवकरः शक्यते शोध्धुमेवम् ॥"

(179) To purify the inner self, to remove inner defilement, that is true Śauca. Some people consider water to be Śauca, which is not correct. Therefore, it may be that the body is cleansed of dirt, Śauca = inner purity, and even that is not truly possible, because the body itself is a mine of impurity, a receptacle of impurity. Even if it is bathed in water as vast as the ocean for thousands of years, it will not become pure! Even fish, poor things, stay in water for twenty-four hours! Similarly, no matter how many pilgrimages one takes, Śauca is not achieved. This external Śauca is not presented here, but rather internal Śauca is desired. The spiritual Śauca in the form of purity of thought, which is Śauca like water, etc., may amaze the foolish, but not the wise. Because -

Oh! Foolish beings bathe once, bathe again, bathe a third time, and so on, they bathe again and again in pure water and anoint this body, which is the seat of excrement, with sandalwood and fragrant substances; and now they consider themselves pure and become attached to it; but in reality it is not so. That body never becomes pure. Can a receptacle of excrement ever become pure? It never does.”

Śrī Mansukh Bhai K. in his work, Śāntasudhāras Vivecan, does not give much importance to this external Śauca, considering its limited nature. His vision is primarily directed towards inner purity. He bathes in the water of meditation, in the purity of the lotus, in the form of emotional bathing. He bathes in the pure peace of Brahmacharya, which is the holy pilgrimage within the Dharma, and becomes pure and spotless, renouncing faults and becoming cool.”
