जैसे कि कोई लोहे की नाव में बैठकर समुद्र पार करना चाहे । लोहे की नौका पर चढ़ा हुआ व्यक्ति समुद्र में डूब जाता है, वैसे ही दम्भी संसार-समुद्र में डूब जाता है ॥३॥ किं व्रतेन तपोभिर्वा, दम्भश्चेन्न निराकृतः । किमादर्शन किं दीपैर्यद्यान्ध्यं न दृशोर्गतम् ॥४॥
भावार्थ : जिसने दम्भ का त्याग नहीं किया, उसे व्रत ग्रहण करने या विविध तप करने से क्या लाभ है? कुछ भी तो नहीं । अन्धे आदमी के लिये दर्पण और दीपक किस काम के? जिस प्रकार अन्धे के लिये ये दोनों निरूपयोगी हैं, उसी प्रकार दम्भी के लिये व्रत, तप आदि किसी काम के नहीं हैं, निरर्थक
हैं ॥४॥
केशलोच-धराशय्या - भिक्षा-ब्रह्मव्रतादिकम् । दम्भेन दूष्यते सर्वं त्रासेनेव महामणिः ॥५॥
भावार्थ : जिस प्रकार बहुमूल्य मणि में जरा-सा दाग (त्रास) लग जाय तो वह बिल्कुल निकम्मा हो जाता है, वह अत्यन्त दूषित हो जाता है; इसी प्रकार साधुवेष धारण करके कोई व्यक्ति केशलोच करता हो, भूमि पर शयन करता हो, दोषरहित भिक्षा ग्रहण करता हो, ब्रह्मचर्य आदि महाव्रतों का पालन करता हो, विविध परिषह-उपसर्ग आदि सहन करता हो, लेकिन उसके जीवन में दम्भरूपी दाग हो तो मोक्ष
