मोघं निन्दन्निजं कृत्यं, प्रशंसन् परसम्पदः । विस्मितः प्रार्थयन्नेताः प्रसक्तश्चैतदर्जने ॥८॥
भावार्थ : अपने निष्फल हुए कृत्य की जो निन्दा करता है, दूसरों की सांसारिक सम्पत्ति की प्रशंसा करता है, विस्मित होकर उन सम्पत्तियों के लिए प्रार्थना ( याचना या अभिलाषा) करता है, तथा उन्हें प्राप्त करने के लिए आसक्त हो जाता है । अपने शिल्प, वाणिज्य आदि कार्यों (व्यवसायों) में भरसक प्रयत्न करने पर भी निष्फल हो जाने पर उक्त निष्फल हुए निज कार्य की निन्दा करता है, दूसरे की सम्पत्तियों = सांसारिक धन आदि का बखान करता है, तथा उन सम्पत्तियों के बारे में चमत्कार से विस्मिय होकर उनकी प्रार्थना ( उनको पाने की अभिलाषा) करता है तथा उन सम्पत्तियों को येन-केनप्रकारेण पाने को अत्यन्त लालायित (आसक्त) रहता है । ऐसे लक्षणों वाले व्यक्ति को आर्त्तध्यानी समझना चाहिए ॥ ८ ॥ प्रमत्तश्चेन्द्रियार्थेषु गृद्धो धर्मपराङ्मुखः । जिनोक्तमपुरस्कुर्वन्नार्त्तध्याने प्रवर्त्तते ॥ ९ ॥
भावार्थ : प्रमत्त, इन्द्रियों के विषयों में गृद्ध (लोलुप), धर्म से विमुख, तथा जिनवचनों को अंगीकार न करनेवाला व्यक्ति आर्त्तध्यान में प्रवृत्त होता है ॥९॥
