૧૧૨ સ્કટ લેકેની રાણી મેરિ–પિતાના પતિ ફાંસિસના મરણ પછી ફ્રાંસમાં પ્રતિપક્ષીઓનું જેર થતાં વિધવા મેરિ ઇ. સ. ૧૫૬૧માં સ્કેલેંડ પાછી આવી. તે ધર્મ કૅથલિક હતી. વળી તે ઇલિઝાબેથને ઈગ્લડની હકદાર રાણી તરીકે સ્વીકારવા ના પાડતી. સ્કેલેંડમાં આવ્યા પછી તેણે યુરેપના કેટલાક રોમન કેથોલિક રાજવંશીઓ સાથે લગ્ન કરવા માટે ફાંફાં માયાં, પણ તેમાં ન ફાવતાં છેવટે ઇંગ્લંડના એક રેમન કેથોલિક ને રાજ્યકુટુંબ સાથે સંબંધ ધરાવતા લોર્ડ ડાન્સ (Darnley) સાથે તે પરણી, ઈ. સ. ૧૫૬૫. તેમને પુત્ર જેઈમ્સ ઈગ્લેંડના પહેલા જેઈમ્સનું નામ ધારણ કરી ગાદીએ આવ્યો. પણ ડાર્લે નાલાયક પતિ નીવડે. તે પિતાની સ્ત્રી
My loving people-We have been persuaded by some to take heed how we commit ourselves to armed multitudes for fear of treachery; but I do assure you, I do not desire to live to distrust my faithful and loving people. So rather than any dishonour should grow by me, I myself will take up arms; I myself will be your judge and rewarder of every one of your virtues in the field., not doubting that, by your obedience to my general, by your concord in the camp, and your valour in the field, we shall shortly have a famous victory over these enemies of my kingdom, and of my people.
