લેડી જેઈને ગ્રેને ગાદી આપવામાં આવી. પણ મેરિને પક્ષ બળવાન હતો. ૩૦,૦૦૦ માણસે તેની સાથે થયાં. નર્ધબરલૅન્ડ ને તેના તમામ પક્ષકારે કેદ પકડાયા. મેરિ ઇંગ્લંડની રાણી થઈ જુલાઈ ઇ. સ. ૧૫૫૩. નોધંબરલૅન્ડ શૂર સેનાપતિ, પણ સ્વાર્થી, ખટપટી અને લુચ્ચે મુત્સદી હતા. તે પાછળથી કૅથલિક ધર્મમાં પણ ભળે. પણ રાજદ્રોહના આરોપસર તેને શિરચ્છેદ કરવામાં આવ્યો. જેઈને ગ્રેને તેના પતિને પણ એ જ શિક્ષા કરવામાં આવી. એ બંને નિર્દોષ હતાં.

No queen was worthier of the crown than this usurper, no medieval saint more saintly than the traitor-heroine of the Reformation. Beneath the shadow of the axe her name shines with a histre like Sir Thomas More's; and the light they shed upon the scaffold showed the hideous blackness of the gulf which separated Tudor law from justice.
