श्री सूत्रकृताङ्ग सूत्रम् को सत्पथ के उपदेष्टा-सन्मार्ग बताने वाले पुलिंद-किरात आदि का भी परम उपकार मानकर विशेष रूप से सत्कार करना चाहिये । भगवान महावीर ने अथवा गणधरों ने इस संबंध में यह उपमा या उदाहरण प्रस्तुत किया है । उसे अनुगतकर-उसके तत्त्व या रहस्य को समझकर प्रेरणा द्वारा प्रदत्त उपकार को साधु अपनी आत्मा में भली भांति उपन्यस्त करता है-स्थापित करता है । जैसे मैं इस पुरुष द्वारा जन्म, वृद्धावस्था, मरण आदि अनेक उपद्रवों से परिव्याप्त मिथ्यात्व रूपी वन से सदुपदेश द्वारा निकाल दिया गया हूं। अत: मुझे इस परम उपकारी पुरुष का अभ्युत्थान-आने पर सामने खड़े होकर सत्कार विनय आदि द्वारा पूजा संप्रतिष्ठा करनी चाहिये । इस संबंध में बहुत से दृष्टान्त हैं । जैसे आग से जलते हुए घर में सुप्त पुरुष को जो जगाता है, वह उसका परमबन्धुपरमोपकारी होता है । तथा जहर से मिले हुए मधुर भोजन को खाने हेतु उद्यत पुरुष को उस भोजन को दोषयुक्त बताकर खाने से हटाता है-दूर करता है वह उसका परम बंधु-परम हितैषी है।
णेता जहा अंधकारंसि राओ, मग्गं ण जाणाति अपस्समाणे । से सूरिअस्स अब्भुग्गमेणं, मग्गं वियाणाइ पगासियंसि ॥१२॥ छाया - नेता यथाऽन्थकारायां रात्रौ, मार्ग न जानात्यपश्यन् ।
स सूर्य्यस्याभ्युद्गमेन, मार्ग विजानाति प्रकाशिते ॥ अनुवाद - जैसे नेता-पथदर्शक पुरुष अंधकारपूर्ण रात्रि में न देख पाने के कारण रास्ता नहीं जान सकता, किन्तु सूर्य उग जाने के पश्चात्-रोशनी हो जाने पर वह मार्ग जान लेता है।
___टीका - अयमपरः सूत्रेणैव दृष्टान्तोऽभिधीयते-यथा हि सजल जल धराच्छादितबहलान्धकारायां रात्रौ 'नेता' नायकोऽटव्यादौ स्वभ्यस्तप्रदेशोऽपि 'मार्ग' पन्थानमन्धकारावृतत्वात्स्वहस्तादिकमपश्यन्न जानातिः -न सम्यक् परिच्छिनत्ति । स एव प्रणेता सूर्यस्य' आदित्यस्याभ्युद्गमेनापनीते तमसि प्रकाशिते दिक्चक्रे सम्यगार्विभूते पाषाणदरीनिम्नोन्नतादिके मार्ग जानाति-विवक्षितप्रदेशप्रापकं पन्थानमभिव्यक्त चक्षुः परिच्छिनत्तिदोषगुणविचारणतः सम्यगवगच्छतीति ॥१२॥ एवं दृष्टान्तं प्रदर्श्य दार्टान्तिकमधिकृत्याह -
टीकार्थ - सूत्रकार इस सूत्र द्वारा उक्त विषय में दूसरा दृष्टान्त अभिहित करते हैं । वन आदि के प्रदेशों-स्थानों को भली भांति जानता हुआ भी कोई पुरुष सजल मेघों से आच्छादित घोर अंधकारमय रात्रि में अंधकार के आवरण से जहाँ हाथ से हाथ नहीं दीखता, वह मार्ग को भलीभांति नहीं जान पाता । वही पथ प्रदर्शक सूर्य के उदित हो जाने पर, अंधकार के नष्ट हो जाने और दिग्मण्डल के प्रकाशित हो जाने पर पथरीले-गुफाओं से युक्त ऊँचे नीचे स्थान दिखलाई देने लगते हैं, तब वह-उसकी नैत्र शक्ति अभिव्यक्त हो जाती है । और वह जहां अभिप्सित स्थान को पहुंचाने वाले रास्ते को, उसके गुण दोष जानता हुआ पहचान लेता है, निश्चित कर लेता है।
यों, दृष्टान्त उपस्थित कर सूत्रकार उनका सार बतलाते हैं ।
एवं तु सेहेवि अपुटुधम्मे, धम्मं न जाणाइ अबुज्झमाणे । से कोविए जिणवयणे ण पच्छा, सूरोदए पासति चभ्खुणेव ॥१३॥
