ग्रहण करने का सामर्थ्य प्राप्त हो जाता है । ऐसी स्थिति में पंचभूतों के समुदाय से निष्पन्न शरीर का चैतन्य पांच प्रकार का संभावित होगा ।
यदि प्रत्येक भूत को अचेतन मानों तो एक कठिनाई उपस्थित होगी- जो गुण पांचों में से किसी एक में विद्यमान नहीं है वह उनके समुदाय में कैसे प्राप्त हो सकता है । जैसे बालू के कणों से तेल उत्पन्न नहीं होता । जिस प्रकार बालू के एक कण में तेल नहीं है वैसे ही मिले हुए बहुत से कणों में भी तेल नहीं हो
सकता ।

चार्वाक की ओर से जो यह कहा गया कि मदिरा के प्रत्येक अंग में विद्यमान न होते हुए भी मद शक्ति मादकता उनके मिलने पर उत्पन्न हो जाती है, यह कहना भी युक्तिसंगत नहीं है क्योंकि किण्व आदि में मदशक्ति मादकता किसी न किसी रूप कुछ होती ही है । किण्व में भूख को मिटाने या दूर करने की शक्ति होती है । उसके सेवन से मस्तक में चक्कर आने लगते हैं। जल में पीपासा शांत करने की शक्ति होती
है
। अतः मदिरा में रहने वाली मादकता कहीं बाहर से नहीं आती। पांचों भूतों में से किसी में चैतन्य नहीं है ऐसा मानने पर दृष्टान्त और दान्तिक में समानता सिद्ध नहीं होती । दृष्टान्त का तात्पर्य किसी विषय को उदाहरण द्वारा प्रस्तुत करना है । दान्तिक का अर्थ उदाहरण में कही गई घटना है । दृष्टान्त में चैतन्य न हो और दान्तिक में उसे बताया जाय तो वे दोनों परस्पर घटित नहीं होते - विपरीत होते हैं । यदि भूतों को चैतन्यमय स्वीकार करते हों तो फिर मरण की स्थिति उपस्थित नहीं हो सकती । मरे हुए शरीर में भी पृथ्वी आदि भूतों का अस्तित्व रहता है । यदि कहो कि ऐसा नहीं होता क्योंकि क्योंकि मृत शरीर में वायु और तेज-अग्नि का अभाव हो जाता है, इसलिए मृत्यु होती है, ऐसा कहना एक अशिक्षित ज्ञान रहित पुरुष का प्रलाप मात्र है क्योंकि मृतशरीर में सूजन पाई जाती है- सूजन का फुलाव वायु से होता है इसलिये मृत शरीर में वायु का अभाव नहीं माना जा सकता। उस शरीर मे पक्ति स्वभाव या पाचन स्वरूपात्मक तेज का कार्य भी है क्योंकि उसमें कोथ या मवाद उत्पन्न होता है । अतः उसमें अग्नि का नास्तित्व नहीं माना जा सकता। यदि यों कहो कि उस मृत शरीर में से ऐसी वायु जो सूक्ष्म है, ऐसी अग्नि जो सूक्ष्म है, जिनमें जीवन की आधायकता-टिकाये रखने की शक्ति है- निकल जाती है, इसलिये मृत्यु होती है। यों कहना तो एक प्रकार नामान्तर द्वारा जीव या आत्मा को ही स्वीकार करना है । इसलिए यह कोई भिन्न या दूसरी युक्ति नहीं

भूतों के समूह से उनके मिलने से भी चेतना शक्ति उत्पन्न नहीं हो सकती क्योंकि यदि हम पृथ्वी आदि पांचों तत्त्वों को एक स्थान पर व्यवस्थित कर दें, एक चित्त कर दें तो उनमें से चेतना उपलब्ध नहीं होती, यदि यों कहे कि इन पांच भूतों के देह के रूप में परिणत होने पर ही चेतना अभिव्यक्त होती है, तो यह भी ठीक नहीं लगता क्योंकि दीवार आदि पर चूने आदि का लेप कर देह का आकार बनाया जाय तो उसमें सभी भूतों का अस्तित्व होते हुए भी जड़ता- अचेतना ही उपलब्ध होती है । इस प्रकार अन्वय व्यतिरेक द्वारा आलोचना करने पर चेतनानामक गुण का पांच भूतों में होना सिद्ध नहीं होता यह शरीर में ही समग्र रूप में प्राप्त होता है । आत्मा के शरीर व्याप्ति होने के कारण इसका आत्मा का गुण होना सिद्ध होता है । अपने दर्शन - सिद्धान्त या मत का आग्रह छोड़ कर इसे स्वीकार करें ।
जैसा कि लोकायतिक द्वारा पूर्व में प्रतिपादित हुआ है कि पृथ्वी आदि भूतों के अतिरिक्त, उनसे भिन्नपृथक् कोई आत्मा नामक तत्त्व नहीं है क्योंकि उस आत्मा का ग्राहक या साधक कोई प्रमाण नहीं मिलता।
