धर्म अध्ययनं टीकार्थ - प्रवर्जित-दीक्षित साधु उत्तम व्रतों में स्थित होता हुआ अहिंसादि महाव्रतों की साधना में प्रयत्नशील रहे । अहिंसा की प्रसिद्धि-अभिव्यक्ति हेतु सूत्रकार 'पुढ़वीउ' इत्यादि दो श्लोक कहते हैं । पृथ्वीकाय के जीवसूक्ष्म बादर, स्थूल, पर्याप्त-पर्याप्ति सहित एवं अपर्याप्त-पर्याप्ति रहित भेद से भिन्न-भिन्न हैं । इसी प्रकार अपकाय के, अग्निकाय के तथा वायुकाय के जीव भी पृथ्वी काय के जीवों के सदृश ही भेदयुक्त है। सूत्रकार अब संक्षिप्त रूप में वनस्पति काय के जीवों के भेद ज्ञापित करते है-कुश और वच्चक आदि, तृण, आम एवं अशोक आदि वृक्ष, शालि-चावल, गेहूँ और यव-जौ आदि बीज में ये पांचों ही जीवकाय एकेन्द्रिय हैं । अब शास्त्रकार छठे त्रसकाय का निरूपण करते हुए बतलाते हैं-अण्डे से उत्पन्न होने वाले शकुनि-बाज, गृह-कोकिल तथा सरिसृप-रेंगकर चलने वाले प्राणी अण्डज हैं । बच्चों के रूप में उत्पन्न होने वाले हाथी, सरभ आदि पोतज हैं । जम्बालजर से वेष्टित लिपटे हुए होकर पैदा होने वाले गाय तथा मनुष्य आदि जरायुज हैं । दही, सौवीर-कांजी आदि से उत्पन्न होने वाले जीव रसज हैं । स्वेद पसीने से पैदा होने वाले यूक-जूं, खटमल आदि प्राणी स्वेदज हैं । खञ्जरीट-टिड्डी, मेढ़क आदि प्राणी उदभिज्ज हैं । इनके भेद ज्ञात किए बिनाजाने बिना इनकी रक्षा कर पाना बड़ा कठिन है । अतः यहाँ इनके भेदों का उपन्यास-कथन किया गया है।
एतेहिं छहिं काएहिं, तं विजं परिजाणिया । मणसा कायवक्केणं, णारंभी ण परिग्गही ॥९॥ छाया - एतैः षड्भिः कायैस्तद् विद्वान् परिजानीयात् ।
मनसा काय वाक्येन नारम्भी न परिग्रही ॥ अनुवाद - विद्वान-विवेकशील पुरुष इन छ: कार्यों को जीव समझकर मन, वचन तथा शरीर द्वारा, इनका आरम्भ न करे, परिग्रह न करे ।
टीका-'एभिः' पूर्वोक्तैः षड्भिरपि कायैः' त्रसस्थावर रूपैः सूक्ष्मबादरपर्याप्तकापर्याप्तकभेदभिननैर्नारम्भी नापि परिग्रही स्यादिति सम्बन्धः, तदेतद् ‘विद्वान्' सुश्रुतिको ज्ञपरिज्ञया परिज्ञाय प्रत्याख्यानपरिज्ञया मनोवाक्कायकर्मभिर्जीवोपमर्दकारिण मारम्भं परिग्रहं च परिहरेदिति ॥९॥
टीकार्थ - ये पहले कहे गए छ: काय के जीव जो त्रस, स्थावर-सूक्ष्म, बादर-स्थूल पर्याप्त एवं अपर्याप्त भेद युक्त है, इनका न तो आरम्भ-अतिपात और न परिग्रह ही करे । विवेकशील पुरुष ज्ञपरिज्ञा द्वारा इन्हें परिज्ञात कर तथा प्रत्याखान परिज्ञा द्वारा तथा मन, वचन एवं शरीर द्वारा इनके हिंसा मूलक आरम्भ समारम्भ तथा परिग्रह का वर्जन करे ।
मुसावायं बहिद्धं च, उग्गहं च अजाइया । सत्थादाणाइं लोगंसि, तं विजं परिजाणिया ॥१०॥ छाया - मृषावादं मैथुनञ्चा, वग्रहञ्चायाचितम् ।
शस्त्राण्यादानानि लोके, तद्विद्वान् परिजानीयात् ॥

A renunciate-initiated Sadhu, dwelling in the highest vows, should strive in the practice of the great vows of non-violence, etc. To illustrate the fame and expression of non-violence, the Sutra-maker says two verses, beginning with "Puḍhavīu".

The beings of the earth element are diverse, differing in their subtle-gross, sufficient-insufficient, and insufficient-insufficient categories. Similarly, the beings of the water element, fire element, and air element are also diverse, like the beings of the earth element.

The Sutra-maker now briefly explains the diversity of beings of the plant element: Kusha and Vacchaka, etc., grasses, mango and Ashoka, etc., trees, rice, wheat, and barley, etc., seeds - all these five are one-sensed beings.
