श्री सूत्रकृताङ्ग सूत्रम्
जन्म की अपनी विशेषता है । मनुष्य भव में आकर भी आर्य देश में जन्म पाना अति उत्तम है । वहां भी कुल की प्रधानता है । उसमें भी जाति की अपनी विशेषता है अर्थात् उत्तम कुल, उत्तम जाति पाना बहुत ऊंची बात है । वैसा होने पर भी रूप दैहिक सौंदर्य, सुभगता तथा समृद्धि प्राप्त करना और भी मुश्किल है, वैसा हो जाये तो बल-शक्ति प्राप्त होना और विशेषता लिये हुए है। बल तो प्राप्तहुआ किन्तु लम्बा आयुष्य नहीं मिला तो उसकी उपयोगिता नहीं सधती । अतः लम्बे आयुष्य की भी अपनी महत्ता है। आयु में भी विज्ञान की प्राप्ति महत्त्वपूर्ण है । विज्ञान - विशिष्ट जानकारी के अन्तर्गत सम्यक्त्व - सत्श्रद्धान का प्राप्त होना श्रेष्ठ है, ऐसा होने पर शील की प्राप्ति सदाचरण की साधना उत्तम है । क्रमशः इन्हीं पदार्थों को प्राप्त करना मोक्ष का साधन है, संक्षेप में यह समझना चाहिये । आप लोगों ने पदार्थों में से बहुत कुछ प्राप्त कर लिया है । अब थोड़ा सा प्राप्त करना अवशिष्ट रहा है । अतः समाधिनिष्ट होकर अनार्य - अनुत्तम, अधर्मिष्ट जनों की संसर्ग छोड़कर सत्पुरुषों को सदैव आत्मश्रेयस की ओर ले जाने वाले कार्य करने चाहिये ।

हि णूण पुरा अणुस्सुतं अदुवा तं तह णो समुट्ठियं । मुणिणा सामाइ आहियं, नाएणं जगसव्वदंसिणा ॥ ३१ ॥

नहि नूनं पुराऽनुश्रुतमथवा तत्तथा नो समनुष्ठितम् । मुनिना सामायकाद्याख्यातम्, ज्ञातेन जगत्सर्वदर्शिना ॥
अनुवाद ज्ञातपुत्र सर्वज्ञ प्रभु महावीर ने सामायिक - समत्वभाव, समाधि आदि का कथन किया है। निःसंदेह पूर्व में जीव ने प्राणी जगत ने उसे यथावत नहीं सुनाया, सुनकर उस पर गौर नहीं किया उसका अनुसरण नहीं किया ।
टीकार्थ हुए कहते हैं -

टीका एतच्च न प्राणिभिः कदाचिदवाप्तपूर्व मित्येतद्दर्शयितुमाह-यदेतत् मुनिना जगतः सर्वभावदर्शिना ज्ञातपुत्रीयेण सामायिकादि आहितम् आख्यातं तत् नूनं निश्चितं नहि नैव पुरा पूर्वं जन्तुभिः अनुश्रुतं श्रवणपथ मायातम् अथवा श्रुतमपि तत्सामायकादि यथाऽवस्थितं तथा नाऽनुष्ठितं, पाठान्तरं वा 'अवितह' त्ति, अवितथं यथावन्नानुष्ठित मतः कारणादसुमतामात्महितं सुदुर्लभ मिति ॥३१॥

संसार के समग्र भावों के दृष्टा-सर्वदर्शी, सर्वज्ञानी ज्ञातपुत्र भगवान महावीर ने जो सामायिक आदि का आख्यान, निरूपण किया है । निश्चय ही प्राणियों ने उसे पूर्वकाल में कदापि नहीं सुना । यदि सुना भी तो जिस प्रकार उसका अनुसरण किया जाना चाहिये वैसा नहीं किया, इस गाथा में 'अवितहं' ऐसा पाठान्तर पाया जाता है । उसके अनुसार यह अभिप्राय है कि प्राणियों ने प्रभु महावीर द्वारा प्रतिपादित सामायिक आदि का अवितथ - सत्यरूप में, यथावत रूप में, अनुष्ठान नहीं किया, तदनुसार आचरणशील नहीं । यही कारण है कि प्राणियों के लिये आत्महित आत्मकल्याण दुर्लभ कहा गया है ।
