________________ PAÑCALINGĪPRAKARAŅAM : 193 Santāṇassa na nāso phalavirahā puvvapuvvavirahovi | Santāṇantara kajje paralogo bhe na pāuṇa || 98 || Santanasya na nāśaḥ phalavirahāt pūrvapūrvaviraho'pi | Santānāntarakärye paralokaḥ bhavatām na prapnoti || 98 || If in the absence of result, too, progeny is not destroyed, it proves the absence of result in earlier moments, too | If the work is done without progeny, the afterlife remains unproved, too || 98 || 98. If we take the argument that the knowledge-stream progeny is not destroyed in the bsence of result, we have to admit that the same absence of result is proved in the earlier moments as well. Also, if we take it that the work is done without the knowledge stream progeny, we have to admit that there is no afterlife. In this verse the author demolishes the arguments of the Madhyamika Buddhists' theory of momentariness or Kṣaṇikavāda. The concept of liberation by the destruction of the knowledge-stream progeny (santāna) is flawed, because the progeny is never destroyed; if we accept the absence of result (one moment is the result of the previous moment), it proves. the same absence in the earlier moments as well. And, finally, if we accept accomplishment without the knowledge-stream progeny, it disproves the very existence of afterlife.
