Out of these, Ms. O is the best. It is written in a uniformly beautiful hand and is very accurate. Mss. A and D were collated only for five chapters, but it was found that they did not give any independently good reading. Ms. A is written shabbily and Ms. D is spoiled, as many folios have stuck together, and the ink has spread. So MSS. C. B. and E alone were collated for the text.
A word of explanation is necessary for giving all the variants at the end. Practically all the variants are merely orthographical. There are hardly any variants that change the sense. That clearly shows that the traditional text has been faithfully handed down. The a' gyfa, which is a characteristic of some Mss., is absent in Ms. C.
N. B. Sūtras (41) and (42) on pages 50, and 51, should be numbered as (42 A), and (42 B) respectively. As the error was detected too late, it was thought advisable not to disturb the order.
There are many imperfections in the present edition. An index, for instance, is absolutely necessary for these texts. But for various reasons I could not add it to the present Volume. I intend, however, to get it published in some Journal.
