No. 62, noticed in the Descriptive Catalogue of the Sanskrit Manuscripts in the Library of the Sanskrit College, Calcutta: सप्त । त्वा । हरितः । रथे । वहन्ति । देव सूर्य । शोचिः केशम् । विचक्षण। ___Rgrida, I 50, 8. The musical chanting of the Sāmavāda is far more elaborate and complicate than the artificial mode of the recitation of the Rgvēda and the Yajurvēda. There are seven notes, which are called Krusta, Prathama, Dvitiya, Tritiya, Caturtha, Paincama and Şaştha; the last two are also called Mandra and Anisvārya respectively. They correspond to the notes of the gamut of Hindu music in the following way :-- Sāmavēda. Hindu music. Prathama . .. Madhyama .. .. ma. Dvitiya Gāndhāra Titiya Rşabha ri. Caturtha Şadja sa. Pañcama Dhaivata Şaştha .. Nisada .. .. ni. Saptama. .. .. Palicama .. .. pa. This identification is made according to a passage occurring in the Nāradasikşā which is as follows: यः सामगानां प्रथमः स वेणोर्मध्यमः स्मृतः ॥ योऽसौ द्वितीयो गान्धारः तृतीयस्त्वृषभः स्मृतः ।। चतुर्थः षड्डु इत्याहुः पञ्चमो धैवतो भवेत् । षष्ठो निषादो विज्ञेयः सप्तमः पञ्चमः स्मृतः ॥ Naradasiksa. ga. : :: :: dha.
