Anudatta, and the Svarita, which occur in the Rgvēda and the Yajurvēda. The pronunciation of these Svarās among the Brāhmans of the Såmavēda is quite different from that prevailing among tho Brāhmans of the other Vödas and appears to me more original and scientific. The Udātta is high and emphasised, and the Anudatta is low, while the Svarita occupies a somewhat middling position. Apart from the hymns which are metrical, there are lists of words which are unconected with each other and are pronounced with the above Svarūs. In these separate words and also in the metrical hymns, differences are met with in regard to the position of the Svaras. For instance, we have the hymn,
अग्निं दृतं वृणीमहे accented in the Rgvēda in the following manner :
अग्निं दूतं वृणीमहे होतारं विश्ववेदसम् ।
अस्य यज्ञस्य सुक्रतुम् ॥ In the simple text of the Sāmavēda it is accented in the followe ing manucr :
अग्निं दूतं वृणीमहे होतारं विश्ववेदसम् ।
52 3.13 3 i 2
अस्य यज्ञस्य सुक्रतुम् ।। Now, if we compare the marks of the accents, we see that the figures 1, 2 and 3 stand for the Udátta, Svarita and the Anudātta, respectively. But in tho word 37104_the second syllable is accented in the Rgvēda, while there is no accent (the Udátta) in the word in the Sāmavēda. Again, the word 37 FT has the accent on the second syllable in the Rgvēda, but none in the Sāmavēda. The same kind of difference is seen between the Pada texts of the Rgvēda and the Sämavčda.
