The Brāhmaṇa portion of the Rgvēda in eight Pañcikās, each consisting of 5 Adhyayas. This Brahmana is also called Bahvrcabrahmana and Aitareyabrahmana.
The namo Aitaroya Brāhmaṇa seems to have been applied to the Brāhmaṇa of the Rgvēda in reference to its having been borrowed from another Vēda, or Săkhã or branch of the same Vēda, as the word Aitarāya indicates " belonging to another" (sic Veda). But it was supposed that the word was the name of a sage who composed the work; and a story was invented in support of the etymology and the belief; and it is contained in the following passage :--
प्रवृत्तस्य तु ब्राह्मणस्यैतरेयकले संप्रदायविद एतामाख्यायिकामाचक्षते । कस्य चित् खलु महर्बह्वयः पत्नयो वर्तन्ते ।तासां मध्ये कस्याश्चिदितरेति नामधेयम् । इतरायाः पुत्रो महीदासाख्यः कुमारः । एतच्चारण्यकाण्डे समानायते "एतद्धस्म वैतद्विद्वान् महीदास ऐतरेयः" तदीयस्य पितुर्भायन्तिरपुत्रेषेव स्नेहातिशयः न तु महीदासे। ततः कस्यां चित् यज्ञसभायां महीदासमवज्ञायान्यान् पत्रान् स्वोत्सङ्गे स्थापयामास । तदानीं विन्नवदनं
