બોઈસને કહ્યું કે, આ દેષ કંઈ અંગ્રેજોનો નથી પણ એમની સંસ્કૃતિને છે. વેશ્યા શબ્દને અર્થ હાલે જે કોઈ પણ જતા આવતા મનુષ્યની પાશવી વાસનાઓ પૂર્ણ કરવા માટે થએલે “ગુલામ” એ થાય છે, તેવા અર્થમાં વેશ્યાવૃત્તિ હિન્દુસ્તાનમાં કયારે પણ અસ્તિત્વમાં ન હતી. આપણી તરફ ઉપભોગ્ય સ્ત્રીઓની જાતિ જ હતી, અને હજુ પણ કેટલીક જાતિઓ છે. તે જાતિની સ્ત્રીઓ જે પુરૂષ પ્રેમ કરે તેની સાથે રહેતી પણ ખરી. તેઓ શ્રીમતિની રખાત અને સર્વ કલાકૌશલ્યનું નિધાન પણ હતી.

Jules Bois, visions de L'Inde, p. ss. આ જ જાતિની સ્ત્રીઓ રંગભૂમિ પર કામ પણ કરતી; પરંતુ સભ્ય સ્ત્રીઓએ પણ તેવાં કામો કરવાં એ શોધ વીસમી સદીમાં થઈ છે; તેથી સાહેબી ભાષા સમજનારા અમારા સુશિક્ષિત માટે બોલીએ તો એમ કહી શકાશે, કે પૂર્વે હિંદુસ્તાનમાં રખાત (concubines) હતી, પણ વેશ્યાઓ (prostitutes) હતી.
