The work begins with the verses : श्रीगणेशाय नमः।
भवं नारायणं साक्षात् प्रणिपत्य कृताञ्जलिः । भक्त्या परमयाभ्यर्च्य यप्रच्छेदम्टधिस्तदा ॥ १ ॥ भगवन् किंप्रमाणा भू [:] किमाकारा किमाश्रया ।
किंविभागाः कथं चात्र स+[प्त] पातालभूमयः ॥ व्यास उवाच ।
फ़्टणुष्वैकमना भूत्वा गुह्यमध्यात्मसंज्ञिकम् । प्रवक्ष्यामि सुभक्तानां नादेयं विद्यते मम ॥ वासुदेव परं ब्रह्म तन्मूर्तिः पुरुषः परः ।
अव्यक्तो निर्गुणः शान्त परं ब्रह्म इति श्रुतिः ॥ प्रकृत्यन्तगतो देही बोध्यमानश्च सर्वगः । संकर्षणे गो] ऽयं दृष्ट्वा तासु बौजमथासृजत् ॥
सोऽहंकारं जगत्मध्यै ब्रह्माणमसृजद् विभुः ॥ The first section is devoted mainly to the geographical description of earth including seven oceans, specially with reference to India (Bhārata)—its boundary, its nine divisions, its mountains, rivers, lakes and inhabitants of different races and castes of its nine quarters. At the beginning it speaks also, by way of introduction, of the whole universe. It speaks also of Roma as one of the seven varşas or divisions of the mainland.
2A, "रोमकं चोत्तमं वर्ष तथैव तु हिरण्मयं"। A general description of India :
उत्तरं यत् समुद्रस्य हेमाद्रेश्चैव दक्षियां । वर्ष तत् भारतं नाम भारतिर्थत्र संतति ॥ नवयोजनसाहसो विस्तारोऽस्य महामुने । कर्मभूमिरियं वर्गमपवर्ग च गच्छतां ॥
