Northern India and those found in the South contain the Mābåt. myas of the sthalas in this part of the country. However there are some common portions dealing with places like Benares, Gaya, Prayāga. Some schoları! jump from this to the conclusion that all the works about the places in Southern India are recently written spurious portions. But this is inproper because it can be found that these portions certainly are not later than the printed texts, and therefore are no more interpolations than their compatriots of the north. It is a fact beyond doubt that all Sthalamihätmyas camo into existence after the stalas themselves, and therefore are works written in recent times. After all the Purāņas themselves can be seen growing in extent and namber from time to timel.
The boundaries of each of these Purāņas have not yet been completely fixed except that of the Bhagavata,
Of the PurāQus, the Bhāgivata and the Virpaparāda have commentaries. The former is a great devotional work inculcating Bhakti and is very important for the votaries of the Bhakti cult along with Mahābhārata and Rāmāyapa. It is a work which is very popular throughout the couutry. The following are some of its commentaries that are deposited in this library. Name
