of the Calcatta editions does not exactly correspond to that of the Poona (Anandabrama) editions. Particular mention may be made of the text of the Skändapurăņa printed by the Venkatesvara Steam Press, Bombay. The sch2019 of the Parāņa and its division as it is printed does not correspond to the least extenti to that mentioned in Náradiyapurāṇa and Sūtasaqhitā.
The Editor of the Bombay edition has striven hard to show that that particular work is the real Skåndapurūna. But looking at the difference from the traditional scheme of division and other circumstances one is inclined to consider that the printed toxt might be that of an Upapurā ņa of the same name. Even here one is not sure because the Ms. of that Upaparāņa in this Library has nothing in common with the printed text. The Bhavięgottara and Brabwāņda puranas can be found to be evergrowing and Dr. Wioternitz rightly observes that there are many Mss. in the various libraries in India which mention themselves as being portions of these Purāgas but do not find a place in the printed text.
There is one outstaading fact arresting the reader's attention when he goes over the Mos. of the various Sthala and other Māhātmyas noticed in this Volume. While the published texts invariably contain Mābätmyas of Norta Indian places of pilgri. mage as portions, the Mss. in this Library mention 48 portions of the various Purā pas Mābåtmyas of South Indian places which are not found in the (North Indian) printed texts. From this one sure conclusion can be deduced, that the Mss. of these Purānas found in Northern India generally contain Sthalamā hätmyas of
