Somo works mention the former and the others the latter as one of the Mahaparâņas. 4. Bhaviayatparána is said to be a Mabăpurana but there are two different works Bhaviyyat and Bhavięyottara purăņas. Perhaps both formed one whole Bhavisyat and Bhavidyottara being its component parts. All the above four are included in this section and consequen. tly the nambər has increased to 22. As regards the author. ship of the Paranas tradition attributes it to Vyåsa. Sūta is the inevitable lecturer and Saunaka and other Ruis are the usual interlocutors. Naimisa forest is the common scene of all tho Parānas. These circumstances are improvieed to give to the purānas a semblance of hornogeniety but no scholar now seriously maintains that they are the works of one individual. Neither do they belong to one period. Evidences of different strata can be found as one reads them. At one time there wH8 a controversy that one Bopadeve was the author of the Srimadbhagavata but now it is hushed into silence and Bopadeva is dismissed from the field. From a perdeal of the printed texts and the various Mss. of these Parāgas one is obliged to find that different texts of the same Parāpas exist and that one does not completely correspond to the other. The differences between the printed toxis of these Puranas and the text as represented by the Mes. in this Library have been noted in their proper places under each Purana. Gonerally it my be said that Väyu, Bhavipyat, Bhavi yottara and Brahmånga are the Puriņas whose text is most dissin:ilar from that of the printed editions.
