From an examination of the Mos. in this section we find that some Sthalamābätmyas pertaining to sacred places in Southern India are included in the Mes. preserved in this Library. This is significant when we find that po edition of this work is published in Northern India while there is only one edition in Southern India in Grantha character. This contains 12 amins and savours of a Saivagama in subject matter.
V. MAHĀPURĀNA3 (Nos. 9667-10547) The Purina literature continued till recently to be an unexplored portion of Sanskrit literature. Serious examination of them began with Pargiter who tried the difficult task of fixing the dynasties and time of Kings given in the Vippuparāga.
As for the actual number of Mahāpurā ņas, tradition has it that these are eighteen in number. Many evidences corroborate this number but vary in giving their actual names. The difference is as follows.
1. Some works mention Sziva and Väyu Puranas as aynony. mous but the actual texts reveal that both are distinct.
2. “Bhagavata is vaguely mentioned as a Mahăpariņa. Subsequently differences arose as to whether it was meant to include Devlbhagavata or Srimadbhāgavata under this name?
