Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute Poona are also publishing the Mahabharata--(for the first time critically edited by Dr. V. S. Suktankar) with the co-operation of an Editorial Board of famong scholars. The aim of this Edition is to restore the Mahâbbărata to Vyāsa's own Text. The principle adopted is to reject all that is contained in the Northern Recension but omitted in the Southern as well as to omit the additions found in the Southern but not supported in the Northern recension. Two other Recensions of the Mahabharata deserve notice-the Kasmiri Recension and the Bengali Recepsion, Critical Editions of
these Recensions will, when made available, indicate the real history of the Mabåbhårata tradition and the processes through which it underwent so many changes in its ovolution.
