There is also a Javanese version of the text, edited hy Juynboll available for the Ādi, Viráta and Ābramavågiku to Mahaprastānika parvas pablished at Leiden, This version is in the Kavi language of Jāya where the author in the course of his narration quotes from the Sanskrit Mabābbārata. These quotations, in the Inain indicate their close resemblance more to the Southern Recension of the Text than to the Northern.
One of the main differences between the Northern and the Southern Recensions is the enumeration of chapters and stanzas in each of the Pary2r8 of the Mahábhiratal. In this connection the late Professor Haraprasad Shastri2 has some interesting remarks to offer regarding the method of calculation to be employed for aiming at the traditional figure -a lakh of verses. The argnmonts, though ingenious, do not seem to us to be warranted by the facts. Without unnecessarily counting the 39778 and giving credit for the longer-syllabled stanzas in their proportion of 32 syllables as an unit, we find that the text of the stanzas alone according to the Southern lecension at any rate, approximately give us the number onumerated in the Parvasangrabädhya ya if we omit all 59148 and even if we take a stanza irrespective of the length of its syllables as one unit.
